Getting My Hands Dirty
First thing I noticed? This bike is solid. Yamaha’s known for their reliability, and it shows. I mean, Consumer Reports keeps giving them props for durability, and I can see why. But man, no electric start? That’s a real throwback. Every time I fire it up, it’s like stepping back in time.
- Checked the engine – it’s the SR400, which means a smaller displacement. Apparently, they did something with the crankshaft and piston.
- Took it for a spin – it’s surprisingly comfy up to about 70mph. I was told it could hit 90, which seems wild for a bike like this.
- The stock exhaust was kinda lame, so I swapped it out. Now it actually sounds like something!
The Verdict
This Yamaha SR bike? It’s a project, no doubt. But it’s the kind of project that gets under your skin in the best way possible. It’s like, you want to tinker with it, but without dealing with all the rust and electrical nightmares you’d get with a really old bike. Yamaha really does make them to last, like those surveys keep saying.
If you’re into that old-school feel and you don’t mind getting your hands a bit dirty, this could be your jam. It’s definitely not for everyone, but for some of us, it’s just right. And hey, who knows, maybe after putting some work into it, I can flip it for a nice profit. Or maybe I’ll just keep it forever. We’ll see!
