Woodlawn Vase Details: Learn All About the Prize and Its Meaning

Must read

Alright, so, I’ve been diving into this whole “Woodlawn Vase” thing, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a ride. I heard about it first when i was watching 2022 Preakness Stakes with my friends and kept seeing a silver trophy inside a protective case.

So, I started digging around. This vase, it’s not just any old trophy. Apparently, it’s this big deal in the horse racing world, given out every year at the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. That’s right, at the Pimlico Race Course. I mean, it’s like the Stanley Cup of horse racing or something. It happens every third Saturday in May.

Then, I found out about its history. This thing is old, made way back in 1860 by Tiffany and Company. Yeah, the fancy jewelry guys. Turns out it was originally for some racing group in Louisville, which doesn’t even exist anymore. Anyway, they started giving it out as the Preakness prize in 1917, and it’s been a tradition ever since. They bring out this original, super old vase every year, under heavy guard and all that.

I tried to get a closer look at the actual vase, but no luck. I just found some picture on my computer. They say it’s huge and really detailed, but honestly, pictures don’t do it justice. I gotta see this thing in person someday.

So, then I thought, “Why not try to make a replica or something?” I looked around, but finding details on the design was tough. I did find out that they make smaller silver copies for the winning owner, which is pretty cool. I was thinking, maybe I could make something similar with clay.

I’ve been messing around with clay for a while now. So, I started sketching out some designs, trying to get the basic shape down. It’s got these handles and a lid, plus a bunch of horse-themed decorations. I tried to keep it simple at first, focusing on the overall form.

After a few tries, I started getting something that looked kind of like the Woodlawn Vase. It was rough, sure, but you could see the resemblance. I started adding more details, little horses, leaves, and stuff like that. It was a real pain, but also kind of fun.

Finally, after a lot of work, I had something I was pretty happy with. It’s not perfect, but it’s my own little version of the Woodlawn Vase. It took me some time and I really hope that I can have the chance to take a look at the real trophy!

  • Started researching: Found out the vase’s history and significance.
  • Looked for details: Tried to find close-up images and design specifics.
  • Planned a replica: Decided to make a clay version.
  • Sketched designs: Worked on getting the basic shape right.
  • Started sculpting: Began forming the vase out of clay.
  • Added details: Incorporated horse-themed decorations.
  • Finished the replica: Completed my own version of the vase.

It’s been a fun project, and I learned a lot about this famous trophy. And, who knows, maybe one day I’ll get to see the real thing in person. It is a pity that I can just find some information about it online.
