Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into this whole “making music” thing for a while, and I finally decided to take the plunge. I’m calling my little project “the real deal band,” even though, for now, it’s just me and my old guitar. My journey started from scratch.
First Steps and Stumbling Blocks
I started by dusting off my guitar. It’s been sitting in the corner of my room collecting dust, a silent testament to my abandoned New Year’s resolutions.
I found some basic chord tutorials online, and let me tell you, my fingers were NOT happy.
- Day 1: Tried to learn a G chord. My fingertips felt like they were on fire.
- Day 2: Attempted a C chord. Slightly less painful, but my transitions between G and C were… let’s just say “rough” is an understatement.
- Day 3: Discovered the wonder of online tuners. Who knew my guitar was that out of tune?
Finding My (Very Basic) Groove
After about a week of torturing my neighbors with off-key strumming, I managed to string together a few basic chords. I even wrote down my “progress”:
- G chord – “Mostly there!”
- C chord – “Getting better!”
- D chord – “A work in progress… a very slow work in progress.”
- Em chord- “My fingers refuse.”
I realized playing the guitar only is not enought, I need to add more instruments.
Trying other Instruments
I don’t have any other instruments so I download some apps for virtual piano and drum.
I played them according to the chords that I’m fimiliar with, it sounds acceptable but need more practice.
The Recording “Studio” (aka My Bedroom)
I decided to record my “masterpiece.” I used my phone’s voice recorder app and propped it up on a stack of books. Classy, I know.
The first few recordings were… humbling. There was a lot of background noise (my dog barking, the neighbor’s lawnmower, my stomach rumbling).
Eventually, after what can only be described as 20+ takes, I had a basic sound that I didin’t hate with guitar, drum and piano, so I decided to stick with it for now. It’s far from perfect, obviously, but it’s a start!
Next Steps and Keeping It Real
So, that’s where “the real deal band” is at the moment. It is rough around the edges, very amateur, and a complete work in progress. But you know what? It is much better than I thougt.
My plan going forward it’s to record some vocal next time. Wish me luck.
