Why say Aupa Madrid? This powerful phrase shows true Real Madrid spirit and strong loyalty.

My Bernabéu Pilgrimage, Finally!

So, I’ve been saying “Aupa Madrid!” from my couch for years. Decades, if I’m being honest. Always a dream to actually, you know, go there. To the Bernabéu. Seemed like one of those things you talk about but never do.

Then, last year, things just sort of lined up. I found myself with a bit of unexpected time off, and a little bit of spare cash – not loads, mind you, but enough. I told myself, “Right, this is it. No more putting it off.” I actually went online, fumbled around with the booking sites for the stadium tour. Honestly, I felt a bit daft doing it, a grown man getting all worked up about visiting a football stadium. But hey, some things just get under your skin, don’t they? And this was one of them for me.

The day finally came. I hopped on the metro in Madrid. You could sort of feel the buzz even on the way there, other folks wearing scarves or old jerseys, that quiet kind of excitement. And then you step out, and you see it. The stadium. It’s… well, it’s massive. Pictures you see online don’t really do it justice. It just stands there, all white and kind of imposing. I’m not ashamed to say I felt a proper shiver go down my spine.

Stepping Inside the Legend

Getting in was pretty smooth, actually. First up for me was the museum. Man, the amount of silverware in there! Trophies absolutely gleaming under the lights. You see them on TV after they win something, but seeing them all up close, rows and rows of them, seeing the history laid out like that, it’s something else. They had these cool interactive screens too, showing old goals and famous moments. I think I lost a good hour in there, just wandering around, soaking it all in.

Then, the moment I was really waiting for. Walking out towards the pitch view. You come through this sort of tunnel area, and then BAM! The whole stadium just opens up in front of you. Even completely empty, it’s breathtaking. The green of the pitch looked perfect, and the stands just rise up all around you. I really tried to imagine it full, the roar of the crowd on a big match night. Gave me goosebumps, proper ones.

  • I managed to walk down to the pitch side. Couldn’t go on it, obviously, they’re very strict about that, but I got close enough to almost smell the grass.
  • Sat in the dugout for a minute. Yeah, I actually did. Plonked myself right where the manager sits. Felt a bit silly, but also pretty cool. I might have pretended to bark out a few imaginary orders, just for a laugh.
  • The press room was interesting too. Stood at the podium where the players and managers face all those questions from the media. Can just imagine the pressure in there after a big game.
  • And the changing rooms! Seeing the lockers with the player names, the whole setup. It’s all so professional, so pristine. You realize the level these guys operate at.

It wasn’t just about seeing things, you know? It was about feeling it. Like, I remember watching Zidane play, those incredible volleys he scored. Or Ronaldo, the original one, and then CR7. All those legends, they played on that very ground. It’s like you’re connecting with a piece of history, and your own personal history with the club too.

When I was a kid, my old man, he wasn’t a massive football nut, but he’d always watch the big Madrid games with me on our tiny telly. We didn’t have much back then, but those moments, sharing a bag of crisps and watching the ‘Galácticos’ – that was special. Being there, actually standing in the Bernabéu, it kind of brought all that flooding back. Got a bit emotional, to be honest, but in a really good way.

So yeah, I went, I saw, I felt it. I left the place with a stupid grin on my face that probably lasted for days. It’s more than just a stadium; for fans like us, it’s a bit of a shrine. Definitely worth the effort, every single penny. Aupa Madrid! And I mean it even more now, having been there.
