Trying Out That Tim Rutten Thing
So, I heard about this ‘Tim Rutten’ approach, right? Not the fighter guy exactly, but some drills people were talking about online, tying his name to it. Sounded intense, especially the body shots. Decided I’d give it a crack myself. Needed to shake things up a bit, get the blood pumping differently.

First off, I just watched a bunch of clips. Trying to break down the movement. It’s not just swinging wildly, there’s this specific twist, the way you shift your weight. Looked simple on screen. Famous last words, eh?
Getting Started
Went down to the garage, got the old heavy bag set up. Started slow. Just mimicking the motion. Felt awkward as hell. My feet felt tangled, my shoulders were all wrong. It’s like my body just didn’t want to move that way.
- Tried focusing on the hip rotation first. Felt a bit better, less like I was just arm-punching.
- Then added the little step, the one that gets you the angle. That threw me off again.
- Tried combining them slowly. Felt clunky. Like driving stick shift for the first time.
Spent maybe 20 minutes the first day. Mostly felt like a fool. Bag didn’t seem too impressed either. Just swung there, judging me.
Making It Stick (Or Trying To)
Kept at it for a few days. Little bit each evening after work. You know, instead of just slumping on the couch. Still felt pretty unnatural. It’s funny how something that looks smooth takes so much effort to even copy badly.

What I Noticed
My breathing was all over the place. Trying to get the power meant I was holding my breath, tensing up way too much. Had to consciously focus on exhaling with the movement, like they say in the videos. That helped a tiny bit. It stopped feeling quite so forced.
Then I tried speeding it up. Nope. Form went right out the window. Back to slow motion. It’s a grind, really. You think you’ve got a piece of it, then you add another piece, and the whole thing collapses.
It’s not like in the movies. It’s repetition. Boring, sometimes frustrating repetition. I haven’t exactly mastered anything yet. The bag still hangs there, unimpressed. But, I can feel a tiny, tiny difference in how my body connects when I twist. Maybe. Or maybe I’m just getting tired.
End result? Still working on it. It’s not some magic bullet. It’s just practice. Lot of it. But hey, it got me off the couch, right? So that’s something.
