I’ve been struggling with focus for years. You know, those days when you sit at the desk for 8 hours but get nothing done? Yeah, that was me every damn day. Tried Pomodoro, tried blocking apps, even bought fancy planners. Nothing stuck until my buddy Dave mentioned this 15-20-15 thing over beers.

The First Awkward Attempt
Started simple last Monday morning. Set my phone timer:
- 15 mins work – Cranked out half an email
- 20 mins break – Made coffee, stared at wall
- 15 mins review – Realized my email made zero sense
Felt ridiculous quitting mid-task every 15 minutes. My cat judged me hardcore when I stopped petting her because the timer went off.
Tweaking Like a Mad Scientist
By Wednesday, I started adjusting:
- Added handwritten task cards before each work sprint
- Made breaks screen-free (no Instagram doomscrolling)
- Used review time to shout what I’d done into my notes app
Discovered I can wash dishes in exactly 20 minutes. Who knew?
The Weird Magic Happens
End of week one, my notebook showed:

- Cleared 47 small tasks that’d been rotting for months
- Actually finished my tax forms instead of hating them
- Weirdest part? Felt less tired after work than before
Still screwed it up though. Accidentally reversed cycles on Thursday – 20 mins work, 15 break, 15 review. Do not recommend. Ate 3 snacks in 15 minutes like a raccoon.
Why It Stuck
Four weeks in, here’s the ugly truth that works for me:
- Short work bursts trick my squirrel brain into starting
- The long break actually feels like real rest, not panic time
- Voice-recording reviews created accidental accountability
No it ain’t perfect. Client calls ruin the rhythm. Some days I skip cycles to binge Netflix. But it’s the first method where I don’t feel like punching clocks afterwards. And my cat stopped judging me.
