Okay, so, the “Wife Cup”. Let me tell you, this was a journey. It all started because my wife, she’s always cold, you know? Always stealing my warm drinks. So I thought, “I’m gonna make her the ultimate insulated cup, something that’ll keep her coffee hot for hours.”

First, I scoured the internet. Looking at all the fancy insulated tumblers, the Yetis, the Hydro Flasks, all that jazz. But I wanted something…more personal. Something I made.
Then I hit the hardware store. I grabbed a regular stainless steel travel mug, nothing special. The key, I figured, was the insulation. So I picked up some of that expanding foam insulation, the kind you use to seal up cracks in walls. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
The Messy Part
- I carefully drilled a small hole in the bottom of the mug. Very small. Didn’t want to ruin it.
- Then, using the little straw that comes with the foam, I started injecting it into the space between the inner and outer walls of the mug.
- It…it got a little out of hand. That foam, it expands a lot. It started oozing out of the hole, out of the top, everywhere.
- My kitchen counter became a sticky, foamy disaster zone. My wife was…not thrilled.
After the foam finally set (and I spent an hour cleaning up the mess), I trimmed off the excess and sanded it down smooth. I even found some epoxy to seal up the hole I drilled.
The Finishing Touches
I wanted to make it look nice, so I got some spray paint – her favorite color, of course – and gave it a few coats. Let that dry completely. Then I added a little personalized decal with her name on it. Just a little something extra.
The result? Well, it’s not perfect. It’s a little lumpy in places, the paint job isn’t flawless, but it’s mine. And you know what? It keeps her coffee hot for way longer than her old mug. She uses it every day, and every time she does, I get a little smug satisfaction. Mission accomplished.

It is worth it!
