Alright, let’s talk about the 2010 Mexico national soccer team. Thinking back to that year, man, the World Cup fever was high. I remember getting really caught up in it, especially with that particular squad. Guys like Rafa Marquez still holding it down, Chicharito was the exciting new kid… there was a real buzz.
So, I got this idea. I figured, why not try and make a little fan page? Nothing fancy, mind you. I wasn’t exactly a web developer, not even close. But I thought, how hard can it be? Just a place to put up some thoughts, maybe track their games during the tournament.
Getting Started – The Plan (Sort Of)
First thing I did was look for ways to build a website for free. Found some of those old-school site builders, you know, the drag-and-drop things that always looked a bit rubbish. Signed up for one.
Then, I started hunting for information and pictures. This was tougher than I expected. Finding decent, high-quality photos of the players back then wasn’t as easy as it is now. Everything seemed a bit grainy. I wanted to get shots of:
- The main players: Marquez, Salcido, Torrado, Guardado, Chicharito, Blanco (even if he was older).
- Maybe some action shots from qualifying games.
- The team jersey for that year.
I spent a good few evenings just saving images and copy-pasting bits of text about the players from different places. Didn’t really think about copyright or anything, just wanted the content.
Putting it Together (The Messy Part)
Okay, then came the actual building. Using that free tool was… an experience. Things wouldn’t line up right. Text would look weird. Trying to get the pictures to sit next to the player names was a nightmare. I remember getting really frustrated.
My goal was simple:
- A homepage with a welcome message.
- A page for the key players with their pictures.
- A section where I could type up my thoughts after each match.
I managed to get something basic up. It looked pretty amateurish, honestly. The colors were probably awful. I wrote a few sentences about the opening match against South Africa. Remember that Tshabalala goal? Crazy. And Marquez getting the equalizer. I typed up my excitement about that.
Running Out of Steam
I tried to keep it updated. Put up something after the win against France – that felt huge! Chicharito and Blanco scoring. But then, life kinda got in the way. And maybe my initial burst of enthusiasm started to fade, especially after the Argentina match in the round of 16. Tevez scoring that controversial goal didn’t help my motivation either.
Keeping the site going felt like a chore. Finding time, wrestling with the clunky website builder… I just stopped logging in. The page probably sat there for a while, looking dated, until the free service eventually deleted it, I guess. I never even checked.
So yeah, that was my little project for the 2010 Mexico team. Didn’t amount to much, just a half-finished fan page lost to the internet graveyard. But it was a fun little burst of activity driven by that World Cup excitement. It’s funny looking back on it now, trying to build something like that with the tools and knowledge I had back then.
