So I’ve been trying to get better at tennis lately, right? Saw this player Ryan Peniston making waves and thought I’d study his technique. Started by watching loads of match footage on my tablet – the guy moves like lightning on court.

First step was mimicking his footwork drills in my backyard. Marked spots with duct tape just like his training videos show:
- Sprinted between markers until my legs felt like jelly
- Practiced those quick directional changes he does so smooth
- Did side shuffles until I tripped over my own feet
Next day I dragged my buddy to the public courts. Tried copying Ryan’s double-handed backhand swing. Felt super awkward at first – kept hitting frames or sending balls flying over fences. One nearly took out Mrs. Wilson’s chihuahua walking past court three!
The Real Struggle
Biggest issue was his serve motion. Ryan’s got this compact windup that’s deceptively powerful. When I tried it? Served five balls straight into the net. My shoulder started screaming after twenty attempts. Switched back to my old serve just to win some points.
Discovered his grip change trick through slow-mo videos. Seems easy but coordinating it mid-rally? Forget it. Dropped more balls than I hit. My practice partner started calling me “Butterfingers McGee” after the twentieth fumble.
Epic Fail Moment
Tried Ryan’s signature sliding return near the baseline. Ended up eating asphalt and scraping my elbow raw. The court burn looked nasty. My buddy couldn’t stop laughing while fishing tennis balls out of bushes.

At the end of the month? Results were mixed. My footwork got quicker but I still can’t serve like Ryan. Funny thing – my old groundstrokes actually improved just from trying to imitate his prep routine. Still can’t decide if I’ll stick with his technique or develop my own style.
