Who is Ian Gilligan? Get to know the legendary Deep Purple singer!

Must read

Okay, so today I wanna talk about this guy, Ian Gillan. You know, the dude who sings for Deep Purple? I’ve been listening to a lot of their stuff lately, and I gotta say, this guy’s voice is just nuts.

Who is Ian Gilligan? Get to know the legendary Deep Purple singer!

So, I started digging into him a bit. I was listening to Deep Purple’s stuff from the early ’70s and I was like, “Who is this guy belting it out?” Turns out, it’s Ian Gillan. He joined Deep Purple back in 1969, replacing their original singer.

First thing I did was check out some early stuff. He wasn’t on their first few albums. I found “Concerto for Group and Orchestra,” which was like, their first album with Ian, I guess? It was alright, but not really my thing. It’s kinda weird, all classical and stuff.

But then I hit “In Rock.” Man, that’s where it’s at. Gillan’s voice on that album, it’s just insane. I mean, the guy can scream! That’s when I realized, this is the voice of Deep Purple. Powerful, high notes, the whole shebang.

I read somewhere that he was all into Elvis when he was a kid. You can kinda hear it, I guess, in the way he performs. Before Deep Purple, he was in some local bands, Episode Six being one of them. Nothing major, just getting his start, you know?

What I Found Out

  • He’s the voice of Deep Purple: Seriously, when you think Deep Purple, you think Ian Gillan’s voice.
  • “In Rock” is his masterpiece: If you wanna hear him at his best, check out that album.
  • He’s not a fan of the VIP stuff: I read that he prefers meeting “ordinary” fans, not just the rich ones. That’s pretty cool.
  • He was influenced by Elvis: Makes sense when you hear him sing, you know?
  • Deep Purple did that “Long Goodbye” tour in 2017: Ian said it was kind of a joke, just to sell tickets, haha.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my little deep dive into Ian Gillan. The dude’s a legend. If you’re into classic rock, and you haven’t heard him, you’re missing out. Go check out some Deep Purple, especially “In Rock.” You won’t regret it!
