So, I was trying to come up with some names for black gems the other day. You know, for a little project I’m tinkering with. Just needed that dark, mysterious kind of vibe for some in-game items or maybe story elements, haven’t decided yet.

First off, I just tried thinking off the top of my head. My brain immediately went to the super obvious stuff like ‘Dark Stone’, ‘Shadow Gem’, ‘Night Crystal’. Honestly, pretty lame. Sounded like something a five-year-old would make up. Needed something with a bit more flavor, something that felt a bit more grounded or just… cooler.
Digging into Real Stones
Okay, plan B. I figured I should look up actual black minerals and gemstones. That usually gives some good starting points. Fired up my browser and just started searching for lists of black rocks and gems. Spent a good chunk of time just scrolling through pictures and descriptions. Found some decent ones this way:
- Onyx
- Obsidian
- Jet (like the fossilized wood kind)
- Hematite (sometimes looks black and shiny)
- Black Diamond (obviously)
- Black Pearl (not technically a stone, but fits the vibe)
- Tourmaline (specifically the black kind, Schorl)
- Garnet (Melanite is a black variety)
- Spinel (can be black)
This was definitely better than ‘Dark Stone’. Having real names gives it a bit more weight, you know? Onyx and Obsidian are classics for a reason.
Getting More Creative
But then I thought, why limit myself? It’s my project, I can make stuff up! So, I started thinking about things associated with black, darkness, or just cool-sounding concepts. Night, shadows, void, ash, coal, space, mythology… stuff like that.
This opened up more doors. I started mixing and matching ideas. What about names related to the look or feel? Or maybe where you might find such a gem in a fantasy world?

- Voidstone
- Ashen Shard
- Coalheart
- Soot Gem
- Umbra Crystal (Umbra means shadow, sounds fancy)
- Stygian Stone (like the River Styx)
- Nightfire Ember (if it had like, little red flecks)
- Crow’s Eye Gem
- Deeprock Fragment
Yeah, that felt more like it. Combining real-world inspiration with made-up fantasy elements usually works out pretty well for me. It’s less about finding a definitive list and more about exploring the idea of a black gem and seeing what words stick.
So that was my little journey into naming black gems. Started basic, looked at the real world, then just let my brain wander a bit. Ended up with a bunch of options I can use now. Pretty happy with how that turned out. It’s always fun to see where a simple search can lead you.
