Okay, so the other day I got this weird urge, thinking about old shows, and somehow “Speed Racer: The Next Generation” popped into my head. Don’t ask me why. Maybe saw a picture somewhere, or maybe it was just random brain static. Anyway, it got me thinking about those cool car designs.

So, I had this older racing game sitting on my hard drive, you know, one of those slightly arcadey ones with decent customization options. I thought, hey, why not try and make something that looks a bit like one of the cars from that show? Seemed like a fun way to waste an afternoon.
Getting Started
First thing, I booted up the game. Took a while, updates and stuff, you know how it is. Then I headed straight for the garage or car editor section. I had a basic sports car model unlocked, looked kinda sleek, maybe a good base to start with.
I spent a bit just messing around with the controls in the editor, reminding myself how it worked. Rotating the car, zooming in, figuring out the paint tools and the decal system again. It’s never as intuitive as you remember.
The Actual Process
Alright, time to get serious. The main goal was mimicking the look, mostly the color scheme, of Speed’s car, the Mach 6. White body, red accents, that sort of thing. Sounds easy, right?
- Painting: Started with the base color. Found a decent white. Then tried adding the red highlights. The editor had zones, you know, hood, roof, sides. Getting the red stripes where I wanted them took some fiddling. Sometimes the zones were bigger than I wanted, painted over bits I wanted to keep white.
- Decals: This was the tricky part. The game had a bunch of pre-made shapes and symbols, but nothing that looked exactly like the logos or specific designs from the show. I tried layering simple shapes – circles, lines, triangles – to sort of build up the look. Trying to get that ‘M’ shape on the hood? Forget about it. I spent ages trying different combinations of lines and stuff, but it just looked messy.
- Wheels and Extras: Changed the wheels to something that looked a bit more futuristic, or at least sporty. Added a spoiler that kinda matched the vibe. Little details to help sell the look, you know.
Hitting a Snag
Honestly, the decal part was frustrating. The limitations of the in-game editor really showed. I couldn’t get the sharp angles and specific symbols right. At one point, it looked less like the Mach 6 and more like a weird, abstract art project on wheels. I almost gave up, thinking it was a dumb idea anyway.

Pushing Through
But then I thought, okay, perfection is impossible here. Let’s just go for the spirit of the design. Focus on the main colors: white, red, maybe a touch of yellow or gold if I could find a decal that worked. I simplified the stripes, used generic swooshy shapes instead of trying to replicate exact lines. Stopped trying to make the ‘M’ and just put a simple red shape on the hood that looked okay.
It started to look better once I stopped trying to make it perfect. It wasn’t an exact copy, not even close, but it had that white-and-red racer feel. It captured the essence, kinda.
The Result
So, after maybe an hour or two of messing around, I had my “Next Generation” inspired car. It was definitely a budget, fan-made version within the game’s limits. But you know what? It looked pretty cool zooming around the track. The colors popped, and it felt kinda unique compared to the standard cars.
Was it a perfect replica? Absolutely not. But did I manage to create something recognizable based on that initial idea? Yeah, I think so. Took it for a few races, felt pretty good, actually.
It was just a simple little project, messing with an old game. But it was fun to get hands-on and try to recreate something, even if it wasn’t perfect. Reminded me that sometimes just trying stuff out and seeing what happens is the best part. A decent way to spend some downtime, bringing back a bit of that Speed Racer feeling.
