What will you find on the candid planet? See examples of genuine photos and real life stories directly from people everywhere.

Must read

Alright, so yesterday I dove headfirst into this project I found called “the candid planet.” Sounded cool, right? Basically, it’s about trying to capture raw, unedited moments of life, just as they are. No filters, no fancy setups, just pure, unadulterated reality.

What will you find on the candid planet? See examples of genuine photos and real life stories directly from people everywhere.

First things first, I grabbed my camera. Nothing too fancy, just my trusty old DSLR. I figured I’d start by just walking around my neighborhood and seeing what caught my eye. The goal was to be invisible, to blend in and not influence the scenes unfolding around me.

I started by hitting up the local park. Usually, it’s full of staged photoshoots and influencers posing, but I went early in the morning, hoping to catch some genuine moments. And bam! I saw this elderly couple doing tai chi. The sunlight was hitting them just right, and they were totally in their own world. I snapped a few shots, trying to be as discreet as possible. Didn’t want to break their concentration.

Then, I wandered over to the farmer’s market. Now, this was a goldmine. People haggling over prices, kids running around with balloons, vendors showing off their produce. I focused on the interactions, the little gestures, the genuine smiles. I saw a kid trying to steal a grape and his mom giving him a playful scolding. Perfect!

Next up, I spent some time observing people on the bus. Talk about a candid environment! People are just tired, grumpy, and generally not putting on a show. I caught a businessman asleep with his head against the window, a teenager listening to music with their eyes closed, and an old lady knitting. Each one a tiny story in itself.

I even tried to capture some moments at a local coffee shop. This was tricky because people are usually more aware of their surroundings in a place like that. But I managed to get a shot of a group of friends laughing hysterically at something, their faces lit up with genuine joy. Another shot I liked was of a guy intensely focused on his laptop, oblivious to everything around him.

The challenge? Not to interfere. It’s tempting to ask someone to pose or to adjust the lighting, but that defeats the whole purpose. It’s about capturing the real, unscripted moments. Sometimes the best shots are the ones you almost miss because they happen so fast.

By the end of the day, I had a memory card full of images. Now comes the hard part: editing. But the goal isn’t to “improve” the photos, it’s to enhance what’s already there. Subtle adjustments to brightness and contrast, maybe a little cropping, but nothing that alters the fundamental truth of the image.

I learned a lot yesterday. Mostly, I learned how much beauty and interest there is in the everyday, if you just take the time to look for it. And how powerful it can be to capture those moments without artifice or pretense.

  • Gear Used: My old DSLR and a 50mm lens.
  • Location: My neighborhood: park, farmer’s market, bus, coffee shop.
  • Key takeaway: Patience and observation are key.

I’m going to keep practicing this. Maybe next time I’ll try capturing candid moments in a different setting, like a sporting event or a concert. Who knows what I’ll find? Stay tuned!
