What to look for when purchasing a used motorcycle? Avoid scams with these key tips

How My Scary First Used Bike Hunt Went

Man, what a nightmare I had chasing my first used motorcycle. Felt like walking through a minefield blindfolded. Thought I found the perfect bike online – shiny, decent price. Showed up all excited, cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Got there, saw the beast parked. Looked okay from 10 feet away. Started poking around. Kicked the tires – flat spots? Yikes. Squatted down, ran my hand under the seat. Felt wet. Pulled my hand out – engine oil sludge. Dripping! Big red flag screaming “RUN!”

Seller got real jumpy when I asked about service records. “Oh yeah, changed oil regularly!” Then why’s it leaking like a sieve, buddy? Wiped sludge on my jeans pretending not to notice.

Turning Into A Suspicious Weirdo

Made him stand there sweating while I did this weird dance:

  • Poked every bolt head – half were rusted or stripped. Signs someone hacked it apart?
  • Demanded cold start – guy fought that starter for 30 seconds straight. Finally coughed black smoke.
  • Checked VIN stamps everywhere – numbers on frame didn’t match paperwork he waved around. His hands got shaky.
  • Gave suspension a death bounce – sounded like pennies in a tin can. Zero damping left.

Seller started pacing. “Just take it for a test ride man! Stop overthinking!” Uh huh. Like I’m handing cash to a stranger while riding his clapped-out mystery bike?

That Awkward Paperwork Moment

Finally asked to see title. Magic words hit: “Uh… I have a lien…” Meaning bank still owned it! He wanted cash to “pay it off” then release title later. Yeah right – classic scam where you pay and never get paperwork!

Tried calling the lienholder number on his papers. Disconnected. Bank name sounded fake. Seller mumbled excuses about “bank mergers”. All lies.

What Actually Worked (Eventually)

After wasting weeks on duds, I learned the hard way:

  • NEVER skip checking VIN matches frame and title
  • ALWAYS demand cold start – listen for death rattles
  • Walk away if they rush you – good sellers expect scrutiny
  • Bring a flashlight/magnet – check frame welds for cracks or fresh paint hiding damage
  • Assume it’s stolen if title smells wrong – meet at registration office to verify!

Took forever, but finally found an old guy selling his dad’s bike. Full service history in a binder. Title in hand. Cold started on first crank. Paid maybe 20% more but slept easy knowing I wasn’t buying stolen junk destined to explode. Scammers bank on your rush and ignorance – slow down and become the annoying buyer!
