Today, I wanna talk about something called “victor ludorum”. I first came across this term a while ago, and it kinda stuck with me. It’s Latin, and I thought, “What the heck does that mean?” So, I started digging.

I found out that “victor ludorum” means “winner of the games”. It’s like, the top dog, the big cheese, the one who comes out on top in a competition, you know? It’s not just about winning one game or one race. It’s about being the best overall in a series of events. I thought that was pretty cool. Like, you gotta be good at a bunch of things, not just one.
I did some more searching and found out it’s used in sports a lot, especially in rowing, like those fancy boat races. And it used to be a big deal in some old British schools during their sports days. They’d give out a trophy or an award called the “victor ludorum” to the best athlete. I can imagine some kid walking around, all proud, holding that trophy, being all like, “Yeah, I’m the victor ludorum!”
My Experiment
So, I got this idea. I wanted to try my own “victor ludorum” challenge. I didn’t have a fancy trophy, but I did have a bunch of sports gear lying around. I decided to set up a mini competition for myself. I picked a few different sports that I’m not terrible at:
- Running: I’m not the fastest, but I can jog for a while without collapsing.
- Basketball: I used to play in high school, so I figured I could still shoot some hoops.
- Swimming: I like swimming, and there’s a pool at the local gym.
- Cycling: I have a bike, and it’s a good way to get some exercise.
I planned out a schedule for the week, making sure I did each sport at least twice. I kept track of my performance, like how fast I ran, how many baskets I made, that sort of thing. It wasn’t super scientific, but it was fun to see how I did each day. And let me tell you, it was tough! I was sore in places I didn’t even know I had muscles. But I pushed through, trying to channel my inner “victor ludorum”.
The Results
After a week of sweat and a few near-misses with pulled muscles, I tallied up my results. I wouldn’t say I was amazing at any one sport, but I did okay across the board. I managed to improve my running time a bit, and I didn’t totally embarrass myself on the basketball court. I even surprised myself by swimming a few extra laps. Cycling was probably my best, I felt pretty good cruising around the neighborhood.

In the end, I declared myself the “victor ludorum” of my little experiment. I didn’t have a trophy, but I did have a sense of accomplishment. It was a fun way to challenge myself and try different things. Plus, I got some good exercise, which is always a bonus. Maybe next time I’ll invite some friends and we can have a real competition. Who knows, maybe I’ll even get a trophy made! It could say, “Victor Ludorum of the Backyard Olympics” or something like that. Now that’s a thought!
