What is the top Tapu Koko best moveset? Learn the strongest attacks for winning your matches.

Must read

Okay, so today I wanna chat about Tapu Koko. This electric chicken, or whatever it is, really caught my eye a while back, and I spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out how to make it really shine in battles. It wasn’t always straightforward, lemme tell ya.

My First Look at Tapu Koko

First thing I did, like with any Pokémon I’m trying to get serious with, was look at its stats and typing. Electric/Fairy – pretty cool, not many of those around. And it’s fast! Super fast. Its special attack is also pretty high, but it’s a bit like glass, you know? Can’t take too many hits. The big thing, though, was its ability: Electric Surge. The moment it hits the field, BAM, Electric Terrain is up. That’s huge, powers up its electric moves and stops Pokémon on the ground from falling asleep.

Figuring Out The Moves – Trial and Error Time

So, with that Electric Terrain, my mind immediately went to its special electric moves. Thunderbolt was a no-brainer. Good power, STAB (same type attack bonus, for those who don’t know), and boosted by the terrain. That was slot one, easy.

Next, a Fairy STAB. I looked at Dazzling Gleam. Hits decently hard, and it hits both opponents in double battles, which is a nice little bonus even if I was mostly using it in singles. Some folks might say Moonblast, but Dazzling Gleam felt more reliable for what I was doing.

Then I thought about getting out of sticky situations. Tapu Koko is fast, so being able to hit and run is super valuable. Volt Switch was perfect. Does damage, switches Koko out, and guess what? Also boosted by Electric Terrain! So now I had Thunderbolt, Dazzling Gleam, and Volt Switch. Seemed like a solid core.

That fourth move slot, though, that’s where I did a lot of head-scratching and testing. Here’s what I messed around with:

  • Grass Knot: My first idea for coverage. You know, for those pesky Ground types that laugh at Electric moves. It was okay. Sometimes it did the job, sometimes it felt a bit weak, especially against heavier Pokémon that weren’t super weak to Grass.
  • Roost: This was a game-changer when I tried it. Since Tapu Koko isn’t the bulkiest, being able to heal up half its health? Yes, please. It meant it could stick around longer, fire off more attacks, or pivot out more safely. This felt really good for a while.
  • U-turn: Another pivot move. The idea was, if Volt Switch was blocked by a Ground type or something with Volt Absorb, U-turn would still get me out. I tried it, but with Volt Switch already there, it sometimes felt like I was wasting a slot, especially if I wanted Roost or more coverage.
  • Taunt: I got annoyed by Pokémon trying to set up hazards like Stealth Rock or use status moves on me. Taunt shuts that down. Pretty useful, especially with Koko’s speed. But then I’d miss Roost. It’s always a trade-off, isn’t it?

What I Settled On (Mostly)

After a ton of battles, swapping moves in and out, I found that there isn’t just one “best” moveset. It really depends on what your team needs and what you’re facing. But, for a general, all-around good Tapu Koko, the set I kept coming back to, the one that felt the most consistent for me, was this:

  • Thunderbolt
  • Dazzling Gleam
  • Volt Switch
  • Roost

For an item, I usually slapped a Life Orb on it for that extra punch on all its attacks. Yeah, it takes a bit of health each time, but Roost helps with that. Sometimes, if I was really worried about Ground types one-shotting it, I’d consider a Shuca Berry to weaken a super-effective Ground hit, but Life Orb was my main.

If you want pure, unadulterated destruction and don’t care as much about staying power or being locked into a move, then Choice Specs with Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, Dazzling Gleam, and maybe Grass Knot or Hidden Power Ice (if you can get a good one) can be devastating. But you lose flexibility.

I even briefly thought about a physical Tapu Koko. It gets Wild Charge and stuff. But honestly, its Special Attack is just so much better, it felt like a waste. Stick to special, I reckon.

So yeah, that’s my journey with Tapu Koko’s moves. Lots of trying things, seeing what worked, what got me KO’d, and what helped me win. The Electric Terrain it sets is half the battle, so build around that, and you’ll have a good time with this zappy guardian.
