So, the McLaren MP4/2. Yeah, that car. Total beast. I got really, and I mean really, into that thing for a while. It wasn’t just like, “Oh, cool F1 car.” Nah, I went down the rabbit hole, hard. I just had to know what made it so damn good, how all the bits worked together.

My whole obsession kicked off because I was, well, pretty burnt out. I’d just come off this nightmare freelance project, the kind that makes you question all your life choices.   • The Carbon Chassis: Big deal back then, super high-tech. I was trying to imagine how they even made the stuff, layering it all up. Stronger than steel, lighter too. Wild.
  • Aero Bits: Looks almost simple compared to the spaceships they race now, but for the 80s, it was sharp. I’d try sketching the wings, the floor, just from grainy pictures that looked like they were taken with a potato.

My desk was a disaster zone. Printouts everywhere, notebooks full of scribbles. My wife probably thought I’d lost it, staring at pictures of an old race car like it held the secrets to the universe. But it was good for my head, you know? Like a massive, complicated puzzle.

Getting Stuck and Small Wins

Then I started trying to, like, understand the numbers. Nothing too crazy, I’m no engineer. Just trying to get a feel for power, weight, downforce, stuff like that. How different was it from the car before it, or the one after? It was tough, though. Info from back then is all over the place. Sometimes one guy says one thing, another says the complete opposite. It’s like being a detective with half the clues missing.

Frustration was part of the game. I remember getting totally bogged down trying to understand the gearbox. How did that Weismann thing actually work with the turbo? It’s not like they just leave the blueprints lying around for guys like me. You hit a wall, and you’re just stuck, unless you magically know someone who built the damn thing.

  • But then you’d find a little gem, like an old interview with John Barnard, and suddenly a piece of the puzzle would click into place. Those were the good moments.
  • Other times, I’d just be staring at some blurry photo of the suspension, trying to make sense of it, and get absolutely nowhere. Wanted to throw my computer out the window sometimes.

So, What Was the Point?

Did I become an F1 expert? Hell no. Not even close. But I did manage to scratch that itch. I felt like I actually got the car a bit better, understood why it was such a legend. It was just something I did for myself, no pressure.

And you know what? That whole deep dive actually helped. When I finally crawled back to doing my actual work, my brain felt a bit…reset. I was a bit better at pulling apart complicated problems. So maybe staring at old car diagrams for weeks on end wasn’t a total waste of time. It cleared the cobwebs out, and that was the main thing I got from my little McLaren MP4/2 adventure. Plus, it was way more fun than that last freelance job, that’s for sure.
