This hex grid board game, you know, it’s somethin’ else. All them little six-sided shapes, like a honeycomb, but for playin’. Not for bees, though.
My grandson, he’s got one of these games. He tried to teach me once. Said it was a “strategy” game. I reckon it takes some thinkin’, that’s for sure.
Hex Grid, What’s That?
Well, you see, it ain’t your regular checkerboard. It’s all made of these little hexagons. They fit together all snug, like a puzzle. You put your pieces on ’em, tryin’ to make a line, I reckon.
They call it a hex grid because, well, “hex” means six, I think. And each of them little shapes has six sides. So, a hex grid. Makes sense, I suppose, if you think on it long enough.
Each little six-sided piece in this hex grid board game is called a hex. Don’t ask me why they pick these fancy names for simple stuff. Just more to keep track of, I tell ya!

This board is rhombus-shaped. Like a diamond, but not the sparkly kind. More like the kind you see on a playin’ card. Heard them smart folks call it a rhombus.
Playin’ the Hex Game
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I watched my grandson play. He and his friend, they took turns puttin’ their pieces on the board. They each got a color. Like red and blue, or somethin’ like that.
The whole point, seems like, is to make a line from one side of the board to the other. A line of your own color. First one to do it, wins. Sounds simple, but it ain’t, not really.
You gotta block the other fella, see? Keep him from makin’ his line. While you’re tryin’ to make your own. It’s a lot of back and forth, let me tell ya. One time they played, the whole hex grid was covered before someone finally won.
My grandson, he says this hex grid board game is good for your brain. Keeps you sharp. I don’t know about all that, but it sure keeps him quiet for a while. And that’s worth somethin’, ain’t it?
This Hex Game Is Old!
Turns out this hex game has been around for a while. Some smart fellas, mathematicians they call ’em, made it up. Back in the 1940s! That’s way before I was even born.
They say it’s a “strategy” game. Means you gotta think ahead, plan your moves. Like chess, I suppose, but with these hexagons instead of squares. Too much thinkin’ for me, if you ask me. Some folks like that sort of thing, though. It is a good game for two people to play, you see that on the box often. I guess it is better with friends than playin’ alone.
Different Kinds of Hex Games
Now, they got all sorts of these hex grid board games. Not just the one my grandson has. Some have different rules, different ways to win. Some of these hex grid board game boards are big, some are small. Some are even on the computer, if you can believe that. My grandson plays ’em on his phone, too. Tiny little hexagons on that little screen. I don’t know how he sees ’em.
One game I saw, they had little tiles with pictures on them. They call those hex tiles, I heard someone say. They put these hex tiles down on the hex grid, buildin’ somethin’ or other. Looked complicated. But the young folks, they seem to like it.
Hex Grid Board Game Is a Good Time
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do, somethin’ to keep your mind busy, maybe give this hex grid board game a try. It ain’t for everyone, I reckon. But it’s somethin’ different. And who knows, you might even like it. It is all about connecting, making a line. Connecting one side to the other. You know, like building a bridge, only on a game board with them six-sided pieces.
My grandson, he’s always tryin’ to get me to play. Maybe one of these days, I’ll give it another go. But for now, I’m happy just watchin’ him. Keeps him outta trouble, you know? And that’s always a good thing.
