Alright, so I wanted to get into dirt biking, but I had zero clue what I was actually looking for. I mean, a dirt bike is a dirt bike, right? Wrong! Turns out there’s a whole world of these things.

First, I started by just Googling “what is a dirt bike.” I wanted the basics, you know? I scrolled through a bunch of articles and forums, trying to get a feel for what’s what.
My Research Journey
It became clear pretty quickly that not all dirt bikes are created equal. They’re designed for different kinds of riding. Here’s the gist of what I figured out:
- Motocross (MX) Bikes: These are the high-flyers. Built for jumps and racing on closed tracks. Super lightweight, powerful, and with crazy suspension.
- Trail Bikes: These are more for, well, trails. They’re a bit heavier, more comfortable for longer rides, and usually have headlights and softer suspension.
- Enduro Bikes: Kinda like a mix of MX and trail bikes. They can handle tough terrain and longer distances, and they’re often street-legal (which is a plus!).
- Dual-Sport Bikes: These are the most street-friendly of the bunch. Fully street-legal, but still capable of handling some off-road action.
- Kids’ Dirt Bikes:Smaller engine, easy for kids to learn and play.
I watched some videos,I tried to imagine myself on each type of bike. Was I going to be ripping around a track? Cruising through the woods? A bit of both? The engine size is a Big deal, I saw these numbers like 50cc, 125cc, 250cc, 450cc, and I was like that I should learn.
After all that digging,I started to lean towards a trail bike. It seemed like the best fit for a beginner like me, and it matched the kind of riding I wanted to do – exploring, not necessarily racing.
So, that’s my dirt bike journey so far. I definitely have a much better understanding of what a dirt bike is, and the different types out there. Now it is for me to find the best one for me!
