Want the perfect impact position with driver every time? Try these easy drills to build better habits now.

Must read

Alright, let’s talk about today’s session. I really wanted to hammer down that impact position with the driver. Felt like I was getting a bit sloppy, losing power and consistency.

So, I grabbed the big stick and headed to the range. Didn’t even bother with other clubs first, just straight to the driver. My main thought was getting my body in the right place when the club actually meets the ball.

First few swings? Honestly, pretty much the same old story. Felt okay-ish, but the ball flight wasn’t that strong penetrating flight I wanted. Kind of floaty, sometimes a bit spinny. I could feel myself hanging back a bit, not really getting through the ball properly.

Getting into the Feel

I decided to slow things right down. Like, super slow motion practice swings. I focused purely on what my body was doing at the supposed impact point. I started trying to really feel my weight shifting forward. Not a crazy lunge, but a definite sense that my weight was moving towards the target through the hit.

I kept thinking about getting my hands ahead of the ball at impact. That’s a big one for me. When I hang back, my hands get behind, and I scoop it. So, slow swings, feeling the hands leading the clubhead. Feeling my left hip (I’m a righty) clearing out of the way.

Then I started hitting balls, but only at maybe 50-60% speed. The goal wasn’t distance, just replicating that impact feel.

  • Focused on getting my weight onto my front foot before impact.
  • Tried to keep my chest covering the ball more.
  • Made sure my hands felt like they were ahead of the clubface at the bottom.

It took a while. Lots of swings felt wrong. Either I’d overdo the weight shift and get steep, or I’d revert back to hanging back. But slowly, I started to get a few where the feel was right. It’s hard to describe, but it’s like the ball just gets in the way of the swing, compressed rather than hit.

Seeing Some Progress

After a good chunk of these slower, feel-based swings, I started to gradually increase the speed. Not full bore yet, but maybe 80%. The key was trying to keep that same body sequence and position at impact even as I swung faster.

And you know what? I started seeing a difference. The ball flight got lower, more piercing. The sound off the clubface was more solid, that nice ‘thwack’ instead of a glancing blow. Even the misses weren’t as wild.

Didn’t hit every shot perfectly, of course. This stuff takes constant work. But by the end of the bucket, I felt like I’d made some real progress in understanding and feeling a better impact position with the driver. It’s all about getting that sequence right and making sure the body leads the way through the shot. Definitely something I’ll be keeping an eye on next time out.
