Alright, so I’m back with another travel adventure! This time, it’s all about Tonga. I just got back, and man, what an experience! I wanted to share some of the stuff I saw and did, so here’s my “things to see in Tonga” rundown.

Getting There and Settling In
First things first, getting to Tonga is a bit of a journey. I flew from [Your Starting Location] with a layover in [Layover City]. The flight was long, no joke, but totally worth it. When I finally landed in Nuku’alofa, the capital, I grabbed a taxi to my accommodation. I booked a small guesthouse near the waterfront. Nothing fancy, but clean and the location was prime. I dropped my bags and immediately went out exploring. I just had to!
Nuku’alofa: City Vibes
Nuku’alofa is the heart of Tonga. I spent a day just wandering around. I started at the Royal Palace. You can’t go inside, but it’s cool to see the King’s residence. Took some pictures, of course! Then I headed to the Talamahu Market. Oh man, the colors and smells were incredible! I bought some fresh fruit – so juicy and delicious! I also checked out the Free Church of Tonga, a beautiful white church that’s a major landmark.
‘Eua Island: Hiking and Nature
Next up was ‘Eua Island. This place is a hidden gem! I took a short domestic flight from Tongatapu (the main island). ‘Eua is all about nature. I spent a few days hiking through the rainforest. The Lakufa Beach is a MUST see. The hiking was tough in spots, but the views were insane! Think lush green forests and rugged cliffs. I also went swimming in a natural rock pool. The water was so clear. It was seriously refreshing after a long hike.
Ha’apai: Island Hopping and Snorkeling
After ‘Eua, I hopped over to Ha’apai. This is where the real island vibes kicked in. Ha’apai is a group of smaller islands, and I took a boat tour that went to a few of them. I did some amazing snorkeling. The coral reefs are vibrant, and I saw tons of colorful fish. I even spotted a sea turtle! We stopped at a deserted beach for lunch – grilled fish cooked right on the sand. It doesn’t get much better than that, trust me!
Vava’u: Whale Watching (The Highlight!)
Okay, so the absolute highlight of my trip was Vava’u. This is THE place to go whale watching in Tonga. I booked a tour and went out on a boat. It didn’t take long before we spotted humpback whales. They were HUGE! We even got to swim with them. It was an absolutely incredible experience. Being in the water with these gentle giants was something I’ll never forget. Totally bucket-list worthy!

Food and Culture
I gotta talk about the food! I ate a lot of fresh seafood. The ‘ota ‘ika (raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime) was my favorite. I also tried lu ‘au (taro leaves baked with coconut cream and meat). So good! The Tongan people are super friendly and welcoming. I went to a traditional Tongan feast one night, with music and dancing. It was such a great way to experience the culture.
Wrapping Up
So, that’s a quick rundown of my trip to Tonga. I explored cities, hiked through rainforests, snorkeled in crystal-clear water, and swam with whales. It was an epic adventure! If you’re looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path destination, Tonga should definitely be on your list. I highly recommend it. Now, time to start planning my next adventure!
