Thinking About Buying a Honda Grom 2021? Read This First Now!

Must read

I’ve been seeing these little Honda Groms popping up everywhere lately. They look kinda fun, like a big kid’s toy or something. So, I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a 2021 model. I was thinking about getting a 2022, but a friend told me, “buy new 2022 if you can get one under 4.5k USD imo“. But mine was a bit cheaper, so I went with the 2021.

Getting it home was a breeze. Honestly, it felt like I could have just tossed it in the back of my truck. This thing is tiny! When I saw it online, it didn’t feel that small to me, lmao. I sat on one at the dealer, and I was surprised by how compact it was. Someone said, “120-125mpg @ 5’9 ~240ish, full throttle avg max speed about 52mph“. It sounded a little unbelievable, but I did not expect it would be that small. And I’m not a big guy, but I felt like a giant on it.

First ride out, I was a little nervous. I mean, it’s so small, I wasn’t sure how it would handle. One of my main concerns was, “will I get a second motorcycle?”. But let me tell you, this thing is a blast! I took it easy at first, just cruising around the neighborhood. Then I started to open it up a bit, and man, it’s zippy! It’s not going to win any races, but it’s got enough pep to make you grin like an idiot. Someone online mentioned, “It’s a mini motor powered by a 9ish hp engine that gets like 125mpg. Old ones have a 4 speed but kore options for after market mods and big bore kits. Newer ones have 5 speeds“. And, I have to admit, it’s true. I didn’t believe it before I got it. And it is true that this little engine is a gas miser. I barely put any gas in it, and I’ve been riding it all over. Someone else also mentioned, “Cheap, efficient, and fun: I can only imagine those were the three things in Honda’s design brief for the original Grom.” I think that guy was right on the money. Someone even said, “Today I get to ride the Honda Grom for the first time.. What a fun little bike.” Well, I totally get it now. I’m not sure why it took me so long to try one.

Maintenance and Mods

From what I’ve read, these things are pretty bulletproof. One guy commented, “Reliable And Easy To Maintain Since it has low revs, the engine undergoes less wear and tear than other high revving machines. Like most air-cooled and fuel-injected motorcycles, the Grom is also easy to maintain.” I’m no mechanic, but even I can tell this thing is simple. Oil changes look like a piece of cake, and I doubt I’ll ever have to do much else to it. But that doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about mods! There’s a whole world of aftermarket parts for these things. Exhausts, intakes, big bore kits… you name it. I found some information online, “First introduced to the U.S. in 2014, the Honda Grom, also called MX125 in Europe and East Asia, has become one of the most popular MiniMoto bikes due to its easy handling.” No wonder it is so popular.

I’m trying to decide what I want to do first. But one thing for sure is that it is hard to resist. I saw someone comment about the looks of the new model, “Personally, I think the new style only looks good if you plan to kit it as an off roader or mini adv. The squared styling doesn’t lend itself to street bike styling. But that’s just my opinion.” I kinda agree. I like the classic Grom look better. But hey, to each their own. As for me, I’ll just stick to the street with mine.

Overall, I’m super happy with my little Grom. It’s the perfect little runabout for buzzing around town or just having some fun on two wheels. And I read some information about why people like it, “Motorcycles are standard worldwide because they are small and easy to ride, making them ideal for commuting in cities and short distances. The Honda Grom is one such appropriate motorcycle. It is smaller than many pocket bikes, has a 125cc engine.” It’s a perfect description for this bike. If you’re thinking about getting one, just do it. You won’t regret it!
