So, the Lens Strasbourg match was on my mind recently. It’s funny how a simple fixture can dredge up old memories, isn’t it? This one certainly did for me, and not even about football, believe it or not.
That Trip to Strasbourg… Or Not
Years ago, I’d planned a trip to Strasbourg. Nothing fancy, just a short visit. I’d bought my train tickets well in advance, feeling all organized. Big mistake, that feeling. The day came, and I got to the station, all ready to go. First, the display board showed a delay. Okay, happens all the time, I thought. I grabbed a coffee.
Then the delay got longer. And longer. People started getting antsy. I tried asking the staff at the information desk. You know how that goes. One person told me it was a “technical issue.” Another vaguely mentioned “track problems.” Nobody seemed to know anything for sure, or they just weren’t telling.
- First it was a 30-minute delay.
- Then an hour.
- Then “indefinite.” That’s always a fun one.
After about two hours of just standing around, feeling like a fool, they finally announced the train was cancelled. Just like that. Cancelled. No real explanation, just “sorry for the inconvenience.” Inconvenience? My whole trip was up in smoke!
Trying to Salvage Things
I then spent another hour in a massive queue trying to see if I could get on another train, or get a refund, or something. The person I finally spoke to looked like they’d rather be anywhere else. They offered me a seat on a train the next day, but my plans in Strasbourg were for that day. I was supposed to meet an old friend I hadn’t seen in ages. He was only passing through Strasbourg for that one afternoon.
It was a total wash. I ended up just going home, completely deflated. All that planning, the anticipation, just gone. I never did reschedule that specific trip to Strasbourg, and I didn’t see my friend for another couple of years after that.
So yeah, whenever I see “Strasbourg” pop up, especially in something like “Lens Strasbourg,” my mind doesn’t always go to the football. Sometimes it just goes back to that darn train station and the day everything went sideways. Funny how the brain works, eh? Makes you think, some things, whether it’s travel plans or football results, you just can’t predict them, no matter how much you prepare.
