So, I’ve been digging into this whole “do horses enjoy racing” thing, and it’s a surprisingly complicated question! I mean, we see these majestic animals thundering down the track, but what’s really going on in their heads?
First, I started by just watching some races. Not on TV, mind you, but I actually went to a local track. I wanted to see the horses up close, see their body language, how they acted before, during, and after the race. You know, get a feel for the whole vibe.
What I noticed was a lot of energy, for sure. These horses are clearly pumped up. Some were prancing, some were tossing their heads, some were just kind of… vibrating with anticipation. It’s hard to describe, but it definitely didn’t look like they were being forced to do something they hated.
Then I did a little digging online I was actually surprised to find out.

- British Horseracing Authority, they’re saying horses actually enjoy it.
Then I tried to talk to some people at the track. Found a guy who seemed to know his stuff, maybe a trainer or something. I just straight up asked him, “Do you think these horses like doing this?”
He gave me a look like I was a bit slow, then said something like, “Well, they’re bred for it, you know? It’s in their blood. They get excited, they get to run… it’s what they do.” He also pointed out how well-cared for the horses are – good food, vets on hand, the whole nine yards. That made sense to me. You wouldn’t put all that effort into an animal that’s miserable, right?
So, after all this, my totally unscientific conclusion? I think a lot of horses, maybe most, probably do enjoy racing. At least, they enjoy the running part, the competition, the whole burst of energy. It’s not like they’re sitting around contemplating the ethics of it all. They’re animals, and they seem to get a kick out of doing what they’re built to do.
Of course, it’s not a simple yes or no. Some horses might not enjoy it as much as others. There’s probably a whole range of horse feelings out there, just like with people. But overall? Yeah, I’m leaning towards “they enjoy it.”
