Okay, so I’ve been trying to get better at tennis lately, and one thing I’ve noticed is how I hold the racket. It felt… off. Like I wasn’t getting the power or control I wanted. So, I decided to mess around with my grip – specifically, how I “shift” the racket in my hand for different shots. Here’s what I did:

The Experiment Begins
First, I just stood there, racket in hand, and tried to feel the weight. I tossed it up a little, catching it in different positions. Just getting a sense of the balance, you know?
Finding My “Neutral” Grip
I started with what I thought was my normal grip – the one I use for most forehands. I paid attention to where my fingers were, how much pressure I was using. I even closed my eyes for a bit to really focus on the feel.
The Shift for Backhands
Then, the tricky part: the backhand. I usually struggle with those. I tried slowly rotating the racket in my hand, moving my hand slightly up the grip. It felt weird at first, like I was going to drop it.
- I practiced just shifting back and forth, forehand grip to backhand grip, forehand to backhand. Over and over.
- I wanted to find a “shift” that used as little finger work as possible, I want to change grip fast!
Serving it Up
Next up: serves. I usually just use my forehand grip for serves, but I figured, why not experiment? I tried adjusting my grip ever so slightly, tilting the racket head a little more. Again, it felt awkward, but I kept at it.
The Actual Practice
With these “shifted” grips in mind, I went out to the court. I started slow, just hitting some balls against the wall. At first, I was totally messing up. Balls flying everywhere, no control.

Making Adjustments
I realized I was overthinking it. I needed to relax my grip a bit, let the shift happen more naturally. I also found that the “perfect” shift varied depending on the incoming ball. Sometimes I needed a bigger shift, sometimes just a tiny adjustment.
The Results (So Far)
I used my new grips and shifts and did my best.
- I practiced for 10 minutes for forehand, after 10 minutes, my arm felt really good.
- I practiced backhand for 20 minutes, it was much better than before!
- Last, I used my new grips and did some serves, I still need time to pratice.
Honestly, it’s still a work in progress. I’m not suddenly a pro or anything. But I definitely feel like I have more control, especially on my backhand. It’s like I’ve unlocked a little bit of extra power and accuracy, just by paying attention to how I hold the racket. I’m going to keep practicing this, and hopefully, it’ll keep improving my game. It’s all about those small adjustments, I guess!
