You see, this here Shadow VLX 600, that’s a name you hear a lot. Some folks, they swear by ’em. Others, well, they got their complaints. Me? I just listen to what folks say. Ain’t got one myself, but I hear things.

Now, this one fella, he told me his Shadow VLX 600, it wouldn’t start up no more. Dead as a doornail, he said. Turns out, it was the battery. Just a dead battery. Happens to the best of ’em, I reckon. You gotta keep an eye on that battery, don’t you know?
And then there’s this other thing, somethin’ about the carburetor. I don’t know much about them carburetors, but I hear they can get all gunked up. If that thing’s dirty, your Shadow VLX 600 ain’t gonna run right. That’s what they say. Gotta keep it clean, I suppose. Like cleanin’ your kitchen, gotta do it regular.
Oh, and fuses! Don’t get me started on fuses. Little things, but they can cause a heap of trouble. One little fuse blows, and your whole Shadow VLX 600 might just sit there lookin’ pretty. Not much good if it ain’t runnin’, right? There are usually three, and sometimes more. Best check on them every so often.
This one lady, she had a whole list of things wrong with her Shadow VLX 600. New this, new that. Valve cover gasket, that’s what she said. And the exhaust, oh boy, the exhaust! Said it was all rusted out. Needs new studs, too. Whatever them are. Sounds like a lot of work to me. But she was determined, that one. Bless her heart.
Some folks, they just like to tinker. They want to fix the Shadow VLX 600 by themselves, make it all shiny and new. Add new lights, new everything. I hear they want to make all turn signals LED, add driving lights. Well, that’s fine, I guess. If you got the time and the know-how. Me? I’d probably just take it to a mechanic. Don’t have the patience for all that fiddlin’.

One thing’s for sure, though. You gotta take care of your Shadow VLX 600. Like anythin’ else. Keep it clean, keep it maintained. Don’t let things go too long without fixin’ ’em. Or you’ll end up with a whole mess of problems, like that lady with her list.
- Keep that battery charged up!
- Make sure that carburetor is clean!
- Check them fuses!
And the injectors, they can get clogged. Like when you don’t wash your dishes and food gets stuck. Nasty, ain’t it? Same with them injectors. Gotta keep ’em clean so the Shadow VLX 600 runs smooth. And spark plugs, those are important too. If they are bad, your engine ain’t gonna spark, and then nothin’s gonna happen.
I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout buyin’ a used Shadow VLX 600. 21,000 miles, they said. Wondered how long it would last. Well, I don’t know ’bout that. Depends on how it was treated, I reckon. If the previous owner took care of it, it might last a good long while. If not? Well, you might be buyin’ someone else’s headaches, how long can these bikes last? Are they reliable? You know what I mean?
Now, they had some recalls, I heard. Back in 2007, 2008, somethin’ like that. Seems like there was some problem with them Shadow VLX 600 from those years. If you got one of them, you might wanna look into that. Could save you some trouble down the road. During the final stretch of VT600 production, I think.
One of the most common problems is electrical. It is with wires and the starter, and the battery. I heard it is a big headache. The Shadow VLX 600, it’s got a lot of wires, I guess. And if one of them goes bad, well, you’re in for a treat. Not a good treat, either. More like a bad turnip. Makes you wanna spit.

Anyways, that’s all I know about the Shadow VLX 600. Just bits and pieces I hear from folks around here. You take it for what it’s worth. If you’re thinkin’ of gettin’ one, do your research. Talk to folks who own ’em. And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find yourself a good one. Or maybe you won’t. That’s life, ain’t it? You never really know until you try.
Just remember what I said about that battery and that carburetor. And them fuses! Keep an eye on ’em, and you might just keep that Shadow VLX 600 runnin’ for a good long time. Or not. Who knows? I sure don’t. Just an old lady, tellin’ you what she heard. That’s all.
