Alright, so I was messing around online, and I stumbled upon this hilarious connection between Nikola Jokic, the Denver Nuggets superstar, and, get this, Despicable Me. Yeah, the animated movie with Gru and the Minions. It all started with a meme, and you know how I am with memes – I had to dig deeper.
First, I googled “Nikola Jokic Despicable Me”. Boom. Images everywhere. People have photoshopped Jokic’s face onto Gru’s body, and it’s surprisingly fitting. They both have this, like, imposing presence, you know? But also kind of a goofy charm.
My Deep Dive
Then I started looking at side-by-side comparisons. It’s not just the physical resemblance, which, okay, is mostly the tall, slightly hunched-over posture. It’s also the expressions! Jokic has this deadpan stare sometimes, just like Gru. And when he’s frustrated, oh man, he’s got that Gru scowl down pat.
- The Nose: Okay, let’s be real, their noses are kinda similar. Prominent, you might say.
- The Build: Both tall and, shall we say, substantial.

I spent a good hour just looking at different pictures and GIFs. There are even some videos out there compiling Jokic’s “Gru-like” moments on the court. I even tried to imitate Jokic, and practiced my most “Gru-like” expression. You know, trying to look all serious and intimidating. My wife walked in, gave me the weirdest look,and asked my doing.
After I had thoroughly amused myself (and probably confused my wife), I went and shared a few of my favorite Jokic/Gru mashups on my socials, because the internet had a need to see this. That’s the beauty of it.
So, yeah, that was my day. From a simple meme to a full-blown exploration of the Jokic/Gru phenomenon. It might sound silly, but it brought me a good chunk of entertainment. Who knew basketball and animated supervillains could be so much fun?
