Secretariat offspring where to see them in person check it out

Must read

So, I’ve been digging into this whole Secretariat offspring thing lately. You know, the famous racehorse? Yeah, that one. Turns out, it’s a bit of a rabbit hole, but a pretty interesting one.

I started off just wanting to see how many kids this horse had. I mean, he was a big deal, right? Figured there must be tons of little Secretariats running around. Well, turns out, he had over 650 foals registered. 650! Can you believe that? That’s a lot of horse babies.

So, I got curious about these offspring. What happened to them? Did they become famous like their dad? I started looking into individual horses. One of them, Border Run, was apparently the oldest living offspring for a while, died in 2022. There’s another one, Maritime Traveler, that’s still kicking around in Florida, living the retired life, I guess.

  • I spent hours going through names and dates, trying to piece it all together.
  • It’s kinda sad, actually. Secretariat himself was euthanized when he was only 19. And a lot of his male offspring didn’t do so hot on the racetrack.
  • But, some of his daughters and their kids did pretty well. Found out about this one called General Assembly that set some record that lasted for like, 37 years. Crazy, right?

Then I stumbled upon this darker side of the story. Some of these horses, even though they came from this famous lineage, ended up in bad situations. Neglected, mistreated, you name it. There was one called Freedom’s Flight that was found all emaciated. Makes you think, right? Just because they’re descended from a champion doesn’t guarantee a good life.

A whole world of horse racing and breeding

Anyway, I kept going, looking up pedigrees and trying to understand how all this breeding stuff works. Apparently, it’s a big deal, matching the right mare with the right sire. And Secretariat, being who he was, had a lot of, shall we say, “opportunities” in that department. People really thought his offspring were going to be the next big thing. Some were, many weren’t.

I even found stories of some of his “top offspring” like Lady’s Secret and Risen Star, and Tinners Way. Their stories are pretty cool, actually. But it’s a lot to take in. This whole world of horse racing and breeding is way more complicated than I thought.

Honestly, I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all. But it’s been a fascinating journey, learning about these horses and their lives. Kind of makes you appreciate the good and the bad that comes with being a part of such a famous bloodline.

Oh, and get this. I heard there are only two of Secretariat’s kids left that we know of. Trusted Company, and Border Run I mentioned before, even though she is the elder one. They’re like, 34 and 33 years old. That’s pretty old for a horse, I think. Pretty neat that they’re still around, though.

Anyway, that’s my little deep dive into the world of Secretariat’s offspring. Hope you found it as interesting as I did.
