So, back to that word “own.” After looking into it, I’d say “own” isn’t quite the right fit. It’s not like France just possesses it and dictates everything. It’s more like a very, very close association with a lot of shared responsibilities and benefits, but also with a clear space for local governance and identity. They are French, but they are also distinctively Polynesian with their own culture and local political life.
It’s a relationship, a specific political status. They are under French sovereignty, yes, but with a significant degree of self-rule. So, if someone asked me now, I wouldn’t just say “yes” or “no.” I’d say it’s an overseas collectivity of France, which means they’re part of the French Republic but have a lot of autonomy to manage their own local matters. It’s a partnership, albeit one where France holds ultimate sovereignty.
