Oversquare Engine Explained: Is It the Right Choice for Your Car?

Must read

Okay, so today I messed around with something called an “oversquare engine.” I’d heard the term tossed around, and honestly, it sounded kinda cool, so I figured, why not dive in?

Oversquare Engine Explained: Is It the Right Choice for Your Car?

Getting Started

First things first, I needed to figure out what the heck an oversquare engine even is. Did a little digging, and it turns out it’s all about the bore and stroke. Basically, if the bore (that’s the diameter of the cylinder) is bigger than the stroke (how far the piston travels), you’ve got yourself an oversquare engine.

The Experiment

I found some example engines and listing down some bore and stroke.

  • Find Example: I started to collect the engine data and try to calculate it.
  • Calculation:Use a simple calculator to do that.
  • Conclusion:After list down all the calculation and compare, I realized that’s the point.

Wrapping Up

It was a fun little experiment! I definitely have a better grasp of what makes an engine oversquare now. Might try to mess around with some actual engine specs next time, see if I can really put this knowledge to use.
