So, I was watching a Yankees game the other day, and I heard something I’d never noticed before – the roll call. You know, when the fans in the bleachers start chanting the names of the players in the outfield? It sounded like a lot of fun, so I decided to try it out myself at the next game I went to.

First, I had to figure out exactly how it worked. I watched a bunch of videos online and read some articles about it. Basically, at the start of the game, the fans in right field start chanting the name of the right fielder. Then, they move on to the center fielder, and finally the left fielder. The player usually acknowledges the fans with a wave or a tip of the hat.
My First Attempt
I went to a game a few days later, all excited to try this out. I was sitting in the right field bleachers, right where the action happens. As the first inning started, I took a deep breath and yelled out the right fielder’s name, just like I’d seen in the videos.
- A couple of people around me looked at me like I was crazy.
- But then, a few more joined in.
- And then a few more.
Soon enough, we had a decent little group chanting. It wasn’t the whole section, but it was enough to get the right fielder’s attention. He turned around, saw us, and gave us a big wave. It was awesome!
Getting Better
I kept going to games and kept doing the roll call. Each time, I got a little better at it. I learned the players’ names, figured out the best time to start the chant, and even got some of my friends to join in. We even made a few new friends doing it!
One time, we were so loud that the center fielder turned around and waved even though we weren’t chanting his name yet. We yelled his name even louder. It felt pretty darn good, you know?

It’s become a regular thing for me now. Whenever I go to a Yankees game, I make sure to participate in the roll call. It’s a fun way to feel like you’re part of the game and to show your support for the players.
So if you’re ever at a Yankees game, don’t be shy. Join in the roll call. It’s a blast!
I’m still not sure if I will make this a weekly thing on my blog, but I will keep doing this every time I go to a game for sure!
