Not Really Good With That? Learn How to Quickly Get Better.

Must read

Okay, so the title of today’s little project was “not really good”… and let me tell you, the title fits. It all started with this idea I had, a simple concept, really. I wanted to create something.

I fired up my computer, feeling all optimistic. I even made a fresh cup of coffee, thinking, “This is it, this is gonna be great!”. I opened up my text editor, stared at the blank screen for a good five minutes, and… nothing. Blank page, blank mind. Classic.

So, I started poking around. I figured I’d just start with the basics, get something down, you know? I began with sketching.

After that I thought to get things rolling I’d try the simplest approach possible.

I spent a good hour just fiddling with this, moving things around, trying different parameters, getting increasingly frustrated. The more I messed with it, the worse it looked. It was like one of those things where every time you try to fix it, you just make it even more messed up.

The “Aha!” Moment (That Wasn’t)

At one point, I thought I had a breakthrough. I changed one setting, and for a split second, I thought, “Yes! This is it!”. But nope. False alarm. It quickly went back to being, well, not good.

I even tried to roll back all my changes using “ctrl + z”. And that did not work either. Things got worse.

  • First, I couldn’t go back to the initial point.
  • Second, I made it even worse unintentionally.
  • Third, I got frustrated.

By this point, I was ready to throw in the towel. I mean, I had sunk a couple of hours into this thing, and it was just a mess. I saved the file – mostly out of habit, not because I thought it was worth saving – and shut down my computer.

So, yeah, “not really good” is a pretty accurate description. But hey, at least I tried, right? Maybe tomorrow will be better. Maybe not. We’ll see. At least I can say I learned… something. Probably. Okay, maybe not. But I definitely spent some time doing… stuff. And that’s… something?

I might give it another shot tomorrow, or maybe I’ll just move on to something else. Who knows. That’s the beauty of these little projects, I guess – they don’t always work out, but you always end up with a story to tell, even if it’s a story about how you completely failed to make something cool. And that’s okay.
