My hurt wrist golfing just isnt getting better! When to see a doctor and treatment options.

Must read

So, about this darn wrist. It all started, like these things often do, on a pretty decent Saturday out on the course. I wasn’t even trying to smash the ball, you know? Just a regular swing, maybe a bit eager on the follow-through, and then bam – this sharp little twinge shot up my left wrist. I kinda shook it off, thought nothing of it. Big mistake, obviously.

Played through the rest of the round, but it was definitely there, lurking. By the time I got home, it was throbbing. The next morning? Forget about it. Couldn’t even properly grip my coffee mug. That’s when I knew I’d really done something.

Figuring Out What Went Wrong (or Trying To)

My first thought was, “Great, here we go again.” I’ve had little strains before, but this felt different, deeper somehow. I started doing the usual stuff:

  • Ice, lots of ice.
  • That stinky sports cream that makes your eyes water.
  • Trying to keep it still, which is impossible when you’re right-handed and it’s your left wrist taking the brunt of everything from opening jars to typing.

I spent a good week or two just grumbling and trying to baby it. No golf, obviously. That was the killer. Watching perfect golfing weather go by while I’m stuck on the couch feeling sorry for myself. It’s amazing how much you use your wrist for everyday things. You don’t realize it until one of them is out of commission.

I even tried one of those compression bandage things. Made it feel a bit more stable, but the ache was still there, deep inside. I was getting pretty frustrated, telling anyone who’d listen about my stupid wrist. My buddies at the club all had their theories, of course. “You’re gripping too tight!” “It’s your takeaway!” “You need to see that guy who cracks backs!” Everyone’s an expert, right?

The Slow Road to… Well, Not Being in Pain

After about three weeks of it not really getting much better, I figured I had to do something more than just hope. I wasn’t keen on doctors, honestly. Last time I went for a sports thing, they just said “rest it” and charged me a fortune. So, I started doing some really gentle stretches I found, like, just basic wrist rotations and flexes. Super slow, super careful.

I also started paying more attention to how I was using my wrist even when I wasn’t playing golf. Turns out, I was doing a lot of awkward bending and twisting at my desk job, probably not helping things. So, I tried to be more mindful of that. Small changes, you know?

The biggest thing, I think, was finally admitting I was probably trying to hit the ball way too hard, especially with my irons. Trying to muscle it instead of letting the club do the work. When I finally, gingerly, went back to the driving range, I focused only on a super smooth, easy swing. Felt weird, like I was barely hitting it, but the ball still went. And more importantly, my wrist didn’t scream at me.

It’s been a few months now. It’s not 100%, and I still feel a twinge if I get lazy with my form or try to go all Hulk on the ball. But it’s a heck of a lot better. I guess the main takeaway for me was to actually listen to my body for once, and not just assume I can power through everything. And maybe, just maybe, a smooth swing is better than a fast one, especially for us weekend warriors. It’s a work in progress, this whole golfing without injury thing.
