So today I thought hey why not try making my own crowns edge icons? Been seeing them everywhere in app designs lately. Grabbed my coffee and just dove in head first with no real plan – classic me.
The “Let’s wing it” phase
First off needed tools. Didn’t wanna mess with complicated stuff so opened Figma like always. Created new file and stared at blank canvas for solid 5 minutes wondering if this was dumb idea. Made frame about 200×200 pixels – small enough for icons but still workable with my sausage fingers.
Okay basic shapes time. Drew rectangle for crown base. Resized it like 20 times because proportions looked weird. Then came the triangles for spikes – major headache right here. Either too pointy or too stubby. Accidentally rotated one sideways and thought “wait… isometric view maybe better?” but scrapped that after 10 frustrating minutes. Settled on five basic triangles after fighting with alignment tools.
The “Why is nothing lining up?!” disaster
Tried combining all shapes using boolean operations. Big nope. Edges went jagged and some parts disappeared completely. Undo button got real workout there. Started over and manually connected each point like jigsaw puzzle while swearing under my breath.
Color choices nearly broke me. Tried gold gradient at first but looked cheap. Went flat single color – too boring. Finally did two-tone: dark base with lighter tops using simple linear gradient. Added tiny highlight dots on spike tips because why not.
The magical finishing touches
- Noticed sharp corners looked harsh so rounded everything juuust a bit
- Put subtle shadow underneath because flat designs always feel floaty
- Made outline version using strokes in case someone wants transparent bg
- Exported at multiple sizes cause icons gotta work everywhere
Honestly thought about adding gems but decided against it. My version’s cleaner though might be too simple. Could’ve used Illustrator for vectors but Figma gets job done quick and dirty.
End result? Looks legit sitting on my homescreen now. Not perfect but way faster than downloading random icons. Might tweak colors tomorrow if coffee hits different. Moral of story? Even hot mess process can cook up decent icons if you stubborn enough.
