Little Cricket: What Is It? (Simple Guide for Beginners)

Must read

Okay, so I wanted to make this little animation, you know, like a fun little project. I decided on a cricket – a “little cricket,” to be exact. I’d been seeing some cool animation stuff online and figured, why not give it a shot?

Little Cricket: What Is It? (Simple Guide for Beginners)

First, I sketched out the cricket. Just a rough drawing on paper, nothing fancy. I wanted to get the basic shape down – the long legs, the antennae, the body segments. I looked up some cricket pictures online to make sure I wasn’t totally off base.

Next, I took that sketch and scanned it into my computer. Then I did a image trace, so I could play with it. It let me work with vector.

I opened up the software and imported my scanned sketch. I started by tracing over my sketch with the pen tool, creating the outline of the cricket. This was a bit tedious, I won’t lie. Lots of clicking and adjusting points to get the curves just right. But hey, it’s part of the process, right?

Once I had the outline, I started adding in the details – the eyes, the segments on the legs, the texture on the body. I used different colors and gradients to give it some depth and make it look less flat. The color palette, I mostly stuck to greens and browns, you know, classic cricket colors. There’s many method, but I like the pen tool.

Then came the fun part – making it move! I wanted the cricket to hop. I broke the cricket down into separate parts – each leg, the body, the head. I made each part a separate layer. This way, I could move each part independently.

I created a few keyframes – one where the cricket was crouched down, one where it was mid-air, and one where it landed. The software then filled in the frames in between, creating the hopping motion. I played around with the timing, making the hop faster or slower until it looked natural.

I added in a little background – a simple green field – just to give the cricket something to hop on. Nothing too distracting.

  • First of all, I sketched outline.
  • I used Pen Tools.
  • I divided its body part.
  • For animation, I used Key Frame.

Finally

And… that was pretty much it! My little cricket animation was done. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I learned a lot in the process. It was actually kind of relaxing, in a weird way. Might try animating something else soon – maybe a grasshopper this time?
