Okay, so, I had this word “dern” stuck in my head, and I wanted to know what it meant. So I searched it on Google and found out that it’s a Middle English word, meaning secret or hidden. It’s not commonly used these days.

First, I went to several online dictionaries to get a basic definition.
- Some sources said it means “secret” or “a secret place”.
- Others defined it as “secrecy” or “concealment”.
- There were even some weird definitions, like “gatepost” and “darkness”.
I was like, “What the heck is a gatepost got to do with secret?” It didn’t make sense. So I dug a little deeper, I started looking into the word’s etymology.
I found out that “dern” comes from the Old English word “dyrne” or “dierne”, which meant “hidden, secret, retired, obscure, remote, eluding detection, concealed, deceitful, evil, magical”. It is so cool, right? This old word had a lot of meanings. It could be something hidden physically, or it could be something more abstract, like a secret, or even something negative like deceit or evil. Also, it reminds me to learn how to learn and use technology to my advantage.
Then I looked at some examples of how “dern” was used in sentences. One example was “in dern”, I guess that’s how they used it back then.
Finally, I tried to use “dern” in a sentence myself. I wrote: “He kept his true intentions dern from everyone”. It felt kind of awkward, but it was fun to use this old word.

Learning about “dern” was a little adventure. I never thought a simple word could have such a rich history and so many meanings. And it reminded me that language is always changing, and there’s always something new to learn.
Also, I think learning to see how others think and attack the same problem you faced can help with your development journey. I learned a lot from this experience, and I hope you did too.
