Okay, so I’ve been messing around with my tennis racquet lately, trying to get it just right, you know? I heard about this thing called lead tape and thought, “Why not give it a shot?” Figured I’d share my little experiment here, might be useful for some of you guys.

I started by grabbing some lead tape from a sports store. Didn’t really know what I was doing, just that I wanted to add some weight to my racquet. I’d been feeling like it was a bit too light, especially when I was hitting those powerful forehands. Felt like I needed more “oomph”, more stability.

First, I just slapped some tape on the sides of the racquet head, around the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. Played a few games, and yeah, it felt different. Heavier, for sure. My shots had a bit more power behind them, but I also felt like I was swinging a bit slower. Not bad, but not exactly what I was going for.

Then I did some more reading, maybe I should have done this before, and found out that putting the tape at the top of the racquet head, the 12 o’clock position, is supposed to increase the power even more. So, I peeled off the tape from the sides and moved it to the top.

Played another round, and whoa, this was something else! My serves felt like they had some serious heat on them, and my groundstrokes were definitely more powerful. But, and it’s a big but, it also felt a bit harder to control. Like, I was hitting harder, but not always where I wanted the ball to go. Felt a bit clunky.

Next, I tried a combination. A little bit at 12 o’clock for power and a little bit at 3 and 9 o’clock for stability. It was kinda fun, like customizing my own weapon. And guess what? This felt like the sweet spot. Enough weight to give me that extra power, but also enough stability to keep my shots controlled. I practiced hitting a few balls with different amounts of tape, seeing how it affected the swing and the feel. It took time to find the amount that felt right for me, but it was worth it.

My Little Experiment in a Nutshell:

  • Added tape to 3 and 9 o’clock: More stable, a bit heavier, shots had more power, but felt a little slower on the swing.
  • Moved tape to 12 o’clock: Way more power on serves and groundstrokes, but harder to control, felt a bit clunky.
  • Combo of 12, 3, and 9 o’clock: Just right! Good power, good control, felt like I had a customized racquet perfect for my game.

So, yeah, that’s my lead tape adventure. It’s not rocket science, but it definitely made a difference in my game. If you’re thinking about messing with your racquet’s weight, I say go for it! Just be prepared to experiment a bit to find what works best for you. It’s all about finding that perfect balance, that sweet spot that makes your racquet feel like an extension of your arm. It’s a bit of trial and error, but hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
