I’ve always been obsessed with football history, especially managers’ backgrounds. But whenever folks talk about Sir Alex Ferguson, they only go on about Manchester United trophies. Makes you wonder – what was he like when HE was kicking the ball? So last Tuesday, I decided to properly dig into his player days. Grabbed my laptop and just dove straight in.
First stop – simple Googling
Typed “Alex Ferguson young player photos” expecting proper football shots. Instead, got flooded with modern pics of him scowling in suits! Found mostly manager stuff, barely any player material. Felt mad frustrating clicking through all those pages. Had to get smarter with search words later.
Hit the books (well, PDFs)
Remembered he wrote autobiographies. Downloaded both his major books – Managing My Life and My Autobiography. Scanned through chapters about his early years. Was shocked reading how he started as a striker for amateur club Queens Park at 16! Book said he’d sprint straight from his toolmaking job to games, still smelling of factory grease. Wild!
Watching grainy footage
YouTube hunting came next. Searched “Dunfermline 1960s” since he played there. Found this blurry clip against Celtic where Ferguson headers a goal! Quality was potato-level but clear enough to see his playing style: aggressive headers, shouting at teammates constantly. Looked like he was ALWAYS barking orders even as a player.
The Rangers disaster
Kept digging into his Rangers spell. Club archives showed he got scapegoated after a 1969 Cup Final loss. Manager literally blamed him for “not marking a ghost” during a goal! Got dropped to reserves despite being top scorer. Ferguson wrote in his book that getting humiliated like that shaped his whole manager philosophy later – always protect players publicly.
Last piece – retirement
Almost missed this bit! His player career ended at Ayr United in 1974 at just 32. Stats surprised me: scored 171 goals overall. But the real kicker? He started managing part-time while STILL PLAYING for Falkirk in ’73. Dude was micromanaging dressing rooms as a player! Explains so much about his control nature at United later.
