Must read

Alright, so I’ve been meaning to talk about this “O’Connell Tennis” thing I’ve been messing around with lately. It’s not some magic bullet, mind you, but it’s been an interesting journey trying to get it into my game.

Getting Started with the O’Connell Idea

I first heard some of the older guys at the club muttering about “O’Connell Tennis.” Wasn’t quite sure what they meant. Sounded like some old-school method. Curiosity got the better of me, so I asked around. Turns out, it’s less about fancy shots and more about solid, dependable play, really grinding out points. That appealed to me, ’cause my flashy shots often end up in the fence.

So, I decided to dedicate some practice time to it. My main goal was to see if I could really improve my consistency, especially keeping the ball deep and making fewer silly mistakes. I figured, what have I got to lose, right? Just some sweat and a few tennis balls.

The Actual Practice Grind

My first step was just hitting. I grabbed a massive basket of balls and went to an empty court. The core idea I pieced together for this “O’Connell” style was relentless repetition with a clear purpose. Not just whacking balls, but hitting specific spots, over and over.

So, I started with my forehand. The target was simple: hit ten consecutive crosscourt forehands that landed past the service line but well within the singles lines. Sounds easy? Well, let me tell you, it wasn’t.

  • I’d get to ball number three or four, feeling good.
  • Then, wham! One would sail long, or I’d catch the net.
  • Back to zero. It was frustrating, man. I almost chucked my racket a few times.

I kept at it. I focused on my footwork, trying to get set for every single ball, even in practice. I concentrated on a smooth, full swing, not trying to kill the ball. Just get it in, deep, to that target area. It took a good hour before I managed my first set of ten. Felt like winning a match!

Next session, I did the same with my backhand. That was even tougher. My backhand’s always been the weaker side. Lots of shanks, lots of balls drifting wide. But I just kept telling myself, “This is the O’Connell way, just gotta grind it.”

Then I started mixing it up:

  • Forehand down the line, aiming for ten in a row.
  • Backhand down the line, same deal.
  • Then, alternating crosscourt forehands and backhands, still pushing for that consistency.

I also started incorporating some serve practice with this mindset. Not going for aces, but aiming for high percentage serves to specific spots in the service box. Again, the goal was consistency over power. Trying to hit my spots, serve after serve.

What I’ve Seen So Far

After a few weeks of this focused “O’Connell” practice, I’m definitely seeing some changes. It’s not like I’m suddenly a pro, but there are noticeable improvements.

The biggest thing is my unforced error count. It’s down. In my regular matches, I’m just not giving away as many free points. I’m making my opponents play one more ball, and then another. You’d be surprised how many points you can win just by being a bit more solid.

I also feel more patient on the court. I’m not trying to end the point with a miracle shot on the second ball anymore. I’m more willing to construct the point, work the ball around. It’s a different kind of tennis, more mental, I guess.

It’s been a good experience, this whole “O’Connell Tennis” experiment. It’s taught me a lot about discipline in practice and how just plain old hard work on the fundamentals can make a real difference. Still got a long way to go, but I’m sticking with it. It’s making my tennis more dependable, and honestly, more enjoyable when I’m not beating myself.
