Okay, so, I needed to figure out the length of some irons the other day. It was kind of a head-scratcher at first, but I figured it out. Here’s how I did it, step-by-step.

First off, I grabbed the iron I needed to measure. Then, I found a standard ruler. You know, the kind you probably used in school. The important thing is it needs to be long enough to measure the whole club.
Next, I leaned the iron against a wall, with the head resting on the floor. I made sure the club was standing as straight as possible. Then, I took the ruler and placed it alongside the iron. I lined up the end of the ruler with the ground, right where the heel of the iron head touches the floor.
- Holding the ruler flush against the shaft, I extended it all the way up to the very end of the grip. That’s the butt end of the club.
- I made a note of the measurement on the ruler where it met the end of the grip cap. That’s the length of your iron, simple as that.
But then I remembered something about how your height can affect what length you should use. I read somewhere that for every 6 inches of height, the iron length should change by 1 inch. I’m not very good at math. So I did some quick calculations. For example, if a lady uses a 36.5″ iron, then someone 6 inches taller might want a 38″ iron. Sounds about right, I guess.
Then there was this other thing I stumbled upon: the “wrist-to-floor” method, or WTF for short, hah. Basically, you stand straight with your feet together, arms hanging loose. Then, someone else measures from the floor to the crease in your wrist. This supposedly helps determine the right iron length for you. I tried it out of curiosity. It was a bit awkward, but it gave me another number to consider.
Important Things
After all this, I learned that golf clubs have rules about length. They gotta be at least 18 inches long and, except for putters, no longer than 48 inches. It’s funny how many rules there are for this stuff, right?

Anyway, that’s how I ended up measuring those irons. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I got there in the end. Hope this helps someone out there who’s also scratching their head about iron length!
