So, I’ve been following the Minnesota Gophers for a while now, and let me tell you, the end of 2023 was a real nail-biter. We barely scraped by with a 7-5 record, and the whole bowl game situation was up in the air.

First off, I started hitting up all the usual spots online, trying to figure out if we even made the cut. Turns out, yeah, it was that close. We were one of those teams hovering around the 5-win mark, and it all came down to this thing called the Academic Progress Rate. Who knew academics would play such a big role? Thankfully, our boys had the best APR out of the bunch, which was a lifesaver.
Then came the waiting game. I was refreshing my sports apps like crazy, and finally, the news broke. We got into the 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl! I was stoked! It was like a weight had been lifted. We were going to face off against Virginia Tech, a team we’d never played before. This was going to be interesting.
Of course, the next big hurdle was getting tickets. I started looking everywhere, comparing prices, which was a whole other adventure. Let me tell you, some of these ticket sites have crazy prices. After a bunch of searching and comparing, I finally snagged some without breaking the bank. I also found out that we could get the tickets from the Bowling Green Ticket Office, their phone number is 419-372-0000. This is the first choice for sure.
Now, here’s something I found out while digging around: Our coach, PJ Fleck, is a beast when it comes to bowl games. The guy’s undefeated! 4-0, can you believe it? That gave me some serious hope. Also learned that this would be our 25th bowl game appearance. We’ve been to the Rose Bowl twice, back in the ’60s, but haven’t seen it since. This was a big deal!
I also heard that we earned our sixth win of the season and that we might be the only team with a losing record playing in a bowl game. These two messages really made me excited. It’s like we’re the underdogs, and I love a good underdog story.

Game Day Prep
With tickets in hand, I started planning for the trip to Charlotte. Figuring out where to stay, what to do around the city, the whole nine yards. It’s always a fun part of the experience, you know, planning the whole game day adventure. I mean, we Gopher fans are dedicated. We’ve traveled to almost every bowl game.
So yeah, that’s my story of how I got ready for the 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, from the uncertainty of even getting in to the excitement of securing tickets and planning the trip. Can’t wait to see how it all plays out! Go Gophers!
