My Wild Ride Evolving Porygon
So I spent all weekend trying to get that weird digital duck Porygon to evolve in Pokémon Scarlet. Thought it’d be easy peasy – spoiler alert, it wasn’t. Here’s exactly how I messed around before getting it right.

The Hunt Begins
First things first, I needed a damn Porygon. Took me two hours flying between portals in Area Zero before one finally showed up. Threw about twenty Ultra Balls at the thing – kept breaking out like some glitchy ninja. Almost rage-quit when my last ball finally caught it at 1AM Thursday night.
Step-by-Step Evolution Struggle
Step 1: Had to get this dumb Upgrade item. Wasted Friday running laps around Delibird Presents shops before realizing it’s only sold at the stupid Mesagoza branch. Felt like an idiot when the clerk had shelves full of them.
Step 2: Thought giving Porygon the Upgrade would instantly make it evolve. Nope! Forgot you actually need to battle with it holding the item. Had my level 70 Skeledirge crush like ten wild Pawmi before remembering the Upgrade works during level-up.
Step 3: Finally got Porygon2 popping out of its gross polygon blob after winning a trainer battle near Cortondo. Took five tries because it kept getting knocked out before leveling up. Nearly chucked my Switch when it fainted at 1HP left once.
Step 4: Thought the hard part was over until I needed the Dubious Disc. Had to grind Academy Ace Tournament for BP like crazy. Took eight tournament runs because my Dragonite kept getting frozen solid by Glaceon. Seriously?

Step 5: Gave Porygon2 the Dubious Disc and battled some random Bug Catcher on Route 14. When that final evolution animation finally played? I yelled so loud my neighbor banged on the wall. Porygon-Z’s weird glitchy floating dance was totally worth it though.
What I Learned
- Always pack healing items when forcing evolutions
- Level grinding near low-level trainers saves sanity
- Save before important battles. Always.
- Porygon’s whole evolution line needs too many specific items
Honestly? Feels like Game Freak made this evolution chain just to mess with us. But that floating glitch monster in my party now? Freaking priceless. Next time though, I’m just trading for one.
