How to choose the best Motul bike oil? This simple guide makes selection easy.

Must read

Okay, so I’m gonna share my experience with Motul bike oil. I’m not a pro mechanic or anything, just a regular dude who likes to keep his bike running smooth. Here’s the lowdown:

The Prep Work

First off, I had to figure out which Motul oil was right for my bike. I have a 2018 Honda CB500F, so I hopped online, did some digging. A lot of people recommended the Motul 7100 10W-40. Seemed like a solid choice, good for everyday riding and some spirited runs too.

Next, I gathered all the stuff I needed:

  • The Motul 7100 10W-40 oil (duh!)
  • A new oil filter (got a K&N one this time)
  • A wrench to remove the oil drain plug
  • A wrench or socket for the oil filter
  • An oil drain pan
  • A funnel (essential!)
  • Some rags for cleaning up spills (and there WILL be spills)
  • Gloves (keeps the hands clean-ish)

Draining the Old Oil

I warmed up the engine for a few minutes. Warm oil flows better, but not TOO hot, or you’ll burn yourself. Then, I positioned the drain pan under the oil drain plug. Used the wrench to loosen the drain plug (righty tighty, lefty loosey, remember that!), and then carefully unscrewed it the rest of the way by hand. Hot oil started gushing out – gotta be quick to pull your hand away!

Let it drain for a good 15-20 minutes, until it was just dripping. While that was happening, I tackled the oil filter. Some guys have a special oil filter wrench, but I just used a regular wrench and a bit of elbow grease. Unscrewed the old filter and let any remaining oil drain out.

Installing the New Filter and Filling ‘er Up

Before slapping on the new oil filter, I rubbed a little bit of fresh Motul oil on the rubber gasket. This helps it seal properly. Then, I screwed on the new filter by hand until it was snug, then tightened it about ¾ of a turn with the wrench. Don’t overtighten it!

Once the old oil was done draining, I cleaned the drain plug and put on a new crush washer (important!). Screwed the drain plug back in and tightened it to the proper torque (check your bike’s manual for the correct torque spec). Again, don’t overtighten!

Now came the fun part: pouring in the new Motul oil. I used the funnel to avoid a mess (mostly). My CB500F takes about 3.1 liters with a filter change, so I carefully poured in the oil, checking the sight glass on the side of the engine as I went. You want the oil level to be between the minimum and maximum marks.

The Final Check and Test Ride

After filling the oil, I started the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. I watched the oil pressure light to make sure it went out. I also checked around the drain plug and oil filter for any leaks. Thankfully, everything looked good!

Finally, the best part: a test ride! I took my CB500F for a spin and immediately noticed a difference. The engine felt smoother, the shifting was crisper, and the throttle response was noticeably better. The Motul oil definitely made a difference.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’m really happy with the Motul 7100 10W-40 oil. It’s a bit more expensive than some other oils, but the improved performance is worth it in my opinion. My bike runs great, and I have peace of mind knowing that I’m using a high-quality oil. I’d definitely recommend it to other riders!
