How should you interact with baldurs gate 3 mattis? Tips for dealing with the young merchant.

Must read

Okay, let’s talk about Mattis in Baldur’s Gate 3. This kid, right? You bump into him pretty early on.

First Meeting in the Grove

So, I first stumbled across Mattis inside the Druid Grove. You know, where all the Tieflings are holed up. He’s got this little makeshift stall set up. Acts all business-like, which is kinda funny for a kid his age.

He tries to sell you stuff. Some trinkets, nothing too fancy. But the real thing is his little game. He’s got this ring, see? And he does this whole spiel, trying to get you to guess which hand it’s in, or play some coin flip thing. Classic street hustle.

The Ring Game and the Distraction

I remember thinking, “Alright kid, let’s see what you got.” So, I played along. He’s quite the talker, tries to distract you while he’s doing his thing. While you’re focused on him and his ring, another kid, Silfy, tries to sneak up and pick your pocket. It’s a team effort, these little rascals.

  • I went through the dialogue, tried to keep my eyes open.
  • My character actually noticed the other kid trying to lift something. Had a successful check, I guess.
  • Called them out on it. Mattis tries to play dumb at first, but you can push it.

You got choices here. You can get angry, demand your stuff back if they got anything. Or you can be a bit more understanding. I mean, they’re refugee kids, times are tough. I think the first time I played, I was a bit harsh. Second time, I kinda let it slide, even gave the kid some advice about being sneakier, haha.

Later On…

It was good seeing Mattis later in the game too. Makes you feel like the world moves on, you know? Seeing him survive and make it to the Last Light Inn in Act 2, still trying to make a living, still got that hustler spirit. Shows resilience, I suppose. He even sells some better stuff later on, if memory serves. Found some decent gear off him eventually.

So yeah, Mattis. A memorable little guy. Part of that whole tough situation the Tieflings are in. Started off trying to scam me, but ended up being one of those familiar faces you track through the journey. It’s these little encounters that make the game feel alive, don’t you think?
