Hey everyone, it’s your boy back at it again! Today’s topic got me all riled up: How fast are horses, really? I mean, we see them in movies, galloping like the wind, but what’s the actual deal? I had to find out, so I embarked on this little adventure to get to the bottom of it.

First, I hit up the internet, because where else do you start? I typed in “horse gaits” and “horse speeds” and dug through a bunch of articles. Turns out, it’s not as simple as “fast” or “slow.” Horses have different ways of moving, called gaits, and each one has a different speed. It’s like, they have gears or something!
So, the slowest one is the walk. Apparently, horses walk at about 4 miles per hour. That’s like a leisurely stroll for us humans. I tried walking alongside my neighbor’s horse, Old Bess, and yeah, I could keep up without breaking a sweat. We were basically just chilling, taking in the scenery. It was nice, you know?
Next up, there’s the trot. This is where things start to get interesting. I read that horses trot at around 8 to 12 miles per hour. Now, I couldn’t exactly trot with Old Bess, that would’ve been weird. But I did jog a bit to get a feel for it. It’s definitely faster than walking, kind of like a light jog for us. I could see how horses could cover some ground at this pace.
Then things get serious!
We’ve got the canter and the gallop. These are the big boys, the speed demons. The canter is like a controlled, three-beat run. I found out it goes from 12 to 15 miles per hour. The gallop, though, that’s the real deal. It’s a four-beat run, and get this, horses can reach speeds of 25 to 30 miles per hour when they gallop! I even saw some numbers saying they can hit over 40 mph in short bursts!
- Walk: About 4 mph, like a human’s leisurely walk.
- Trot: Around 8-12 mph, similar to a light jog.
- Canter: 12-15 mph, a controlled, three-beat run.
- Gallop: 25-30 mph, or even over 40 mph in short bursts, a four-beat, all-out sprint!
I watched some videos of horses galloping, and it’s insane! They’re like these powerful, majestic creatures just flying across the ground. I mean, I wouldn’t want to be in a race with one, that’s for sure.

So, there you have it, my deep dive into horse speeds. It was a fun little journey of discovery. I learned a lot, and I hope you did too. Horses are way more complex than I thought, and their speed is seriously impressive. It’s no wonder they’ve been such a big part of human history, helping us travel, work, and even fight wars. They’re truly amazing animals!
