Getting Started: Finding the Right Bike
First things first, I needed a bike. I wasn’t about to drop a ton of cash on a brand new one, so I started scouring local listings, Facebook Marketplace, you name it. I was all over the place, checking out different models, trying to figure out what I really wanted. I spent countless hours researching, reading, and even a few days of searching and meeting up with people.
I eventually stumbled upon a used Sportster 883. It was a bit older, but the price was right, and it seemed like a good starter bike. The seller was a cool dude, seemed honest, and walked me through everything. We even went for a quick test ride around the area. Then I pulled the trigger and bought it!
The First Ride: A Mix of Excitement and Terror
Man, that first ride home was something else. I was nervous, excited, and probably a little reckless. It was loud, it was powerful, and it was way different than anything I’d ridden before. I definitely stalled it a couple of times at stoplights, which was embarrassing, but hey, it’s all part of the learning process.
Getting My Hands Dirty: Basic Maintenance
I’m not exactly a mechanic, but I’m also not afraid to get my hands dirty. I figured, if I’m going to own a Harley, I need to learn how to take care of it. I started with the basics: checking the oil, tire pressure, all that stuff. YouTube became my best friend. I watched countless videos on how to change the oil, adjust the chain, and even do some minor repairs.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing. I remember one time I stripped a bolt while trying to change the oil filter. I had to run to the auto parts store, get a new bolt, and figure out how to extract the old one. It took me way longer than it should have, but I learned a valuable lesson: Don’t overtighten!
Joining the Community: Rides and Rallies
One of the best parts about owning a Harley is the community. I started joining some local group rides, meeting other riders, and just generally soaking up the culture. It’s awesome to be around people who share the same passion, and I’ve learned a ton from talking to more experienced riders.
I finally have time to go to rallies or big rides yet, but that’s definitely on my to-do list. For now, I’m happy just cruising around with my local crew, enjoying the ride, and making new friends.
