Okay, so I’ve been seeing this dude, Gardner Minshew, all over my social media feeds lately. Not gonna lie, the guy’s got a look. I mean, that mustache? Iconic. But it was his hair that really caught my eye recently. This quarterback went full-on mullet, and I just had to try it out for myself.
First, I had to do some research. I looked up a bunch of pictures of Minshew. I found out he calls it the “Mississippi Mudflap”. I don’t know what it is, it just sounds cool, so I’ll keep calling it that.
Armed with these pictures, I went to my barber. This guy is someone who I’ve been going to for years and I trust him to do a good job. I showed him the pictures and told him, “I want this.” He looked at me, looked at the pictures, and just kind of nodded. I think he thought I was crazy, but he’s seen me with some questionable styles before.
The cut itself wasn’t too complicated. We started by trimming the sides and back, leaving the top and back long. This was the hardest part because I’ve been growing my hair out for a while and it felt weird to cut so much off. But I had a goal, so I stuck with it.
- Trimmed the sides and back.
- Left the top and back long for the mullet.
- Styled the top to give it some volume.
Once the sides and back were short enough, he started working on the top. He texturized it a bit, adding some layers to give it that messy, carefree look that Minshew rocks so well. Then, he styled it with some product to give it some volume and hold.
When he was done, I looked in the mirror and… I gotta say, I was surprised. It actually looked pretty good! I mean, it’s definitely a statement, but I think I can pull it off. It’s not something I’ll keep forever, but it’s fun for now.

I took some pictures of myself and posted them online, calling my new hairstyle the “Mississippi Mudflap”. Some of my friends laughed, some were confused, but overall, the reaction was pretty positive. I’m curious to see what they will say about me in person.
So, yeah, that’s the story of how I got a Gardner Minshew haircut. It was a fun experiment, and who knows, maybe I’ll inspire someone else to try something new. After all, life’s too short for boring hair, right?
