Okay, so I saw this “furyk 58” thing popping up all over my golf feeds and I was like, “What’s the big deal?” I mean, a 58 is insane, obviously, but I wanted to really feel how insane it was. So, I decided to try something myself.

My “Furyk 58” Experiment
First, I grabbed my clubs and headed to my local course. It’s nothing fancy, just a regular public course that I play all the time. I usually shoot somewhere in the high 80s, low 90s, so keep that in mind.
I started my round with the mindset of “every shot counts”. Like, REALLY counts. No mulligans, no gimmes, no casual swings. I lined up every putt, even the tap-ins, like it was the final hole of the Masters.
- First hole: Par 4. I sliced my drive into the rough, chipped out, hit a decent approach, and two-putted for bogey. Not a great start, but I stayed focused.
- Holes 2-9: A mix of pars and bogeys. I managed to sink a couple of longer putts, which felt amazing, but also missed a few short ones that I should have made. The pressure was starting to get to me!
- Back nine: More of the same. I had a couple of birdie opportunities but couldn’t convert. My iron play was okay, but my short game was letting me down. I started to think about Furyk’s 58 more, and how impossible it seemed.
I finished the round with a 92. Nowhere NEAR a 58, obviously. But it gave me a whole new appreciation for what Furyk accomplished.
To shoot a 58, you basically have to play perfect golf. Every drive has to be in the fairway, every approach has to be close, and every putt has to drop. And you have to do that for 18 holes straight! It’s mind-boggling.
My little experiment showed me just how difficult it is to string together a bunch of good shots, let alone a whole round of them. It really highlighted the mental toughness and incredible skill required to shoot a score like that. Major respect to Jim Furyk!
