Okay, so I actually went to Chicago back in February 2024. Man, was it cold! But hey, I wanted to see what the city was like in the dead of winter.

Getting Ready and Heading Out
First thing, I knew I had to pack smart. Layers, layers, layers. Seriously, thermal underwear, thick socks, sweaters, a heavy coat, hat, gloves, scarf – the whole nine yards. You don’t mess around with that Chicago wind off the lake in February.
I flew in, grabbed the ‘L’ train from O’Hare. Pretty straightforward, actually. Found my hotel downtown, checked in, and immediately felt that blast of cold air hitting my face when I stepped outside again. It really wakes you up.
Day 1: Museums and Deep Dish
My first full day, I decided to hit the Art Institute. Big place. I knew I couldn’t see it all, so I just picked a couple of wings that looked interesting. Spent a good few hours wandering around, mostly trying to stay warm, haha. They had a nice little cafe inside, grabbed a coffee there to thaw out my fingers.
Later on, I figured I couldn’t go to Chicago without getting deep-dish pizza. Found a famous spot, Giordano’s I think it was. Had to wait a bit, which is normal, they told me. Ordered a small one, which was still huge. It was good, really cheesy and filling. Definitely needed a walk after that, even in the cold.
Day 2: Architecture and Warming Up
Next day, I wanted to see some of that famous architecture. Thought about the boat tour, but yeah, February. Not happening. So I bundled up again and walked over towards the riverwalk area. It was pretty quiet, kinda cool seeing the bridges and buildings with a bit of snow dusting.

I popped into the Chicago Architecture Center. That was actually pretty neat. They had these huge models of the city. Spent maybe an hour or so in there, learned a bit. It’s a good indoor option when your face starts to feel numb.
After that, I mostly just wandered a bit. Found a cozy looking pub near Magnificent Mile. Stepped inside for a beer and just to sit somewhere warm for a while. Watched the people walking by all bundled up.
Other Stuff I Did
- Walked through Millennium Park. Saw “The Bean” (Cloud Gate). It looked cool with the frost on it, but didn’t hang around too long. Too cold!
- Used the ‘L’ train quite a bit. It was reliable, and way warmer than walking everywhere.
- Tried a Chicago-style hot dog from a street vendor. Interesting experience, lots of toppings.
Final Thoughts
So, what’s there to do in Chicago in February? Mostly indoor stuff, let’s be honest. Museums, restaurants, shops, maybe a show if that’s your thing. You have to be prepared for the cold. It’s no joke.
Was it worth it? Yeah, I think so. Fewer crowds than summer, for sure. The city has a different kind of vibe in the winter. Just gotta dress right and plan for plenty of indoor breaks to warm up. It’s an experience, just a very, very cold one.
