That dr big suzuki, my goodness, it’s a big fella! I seen one the other day, looked like it could just ride right over a whole bunch of them little cars. Big tires, big seat, the whole darn thing is just…big. Makes my old bones ache just lookin’ at it, imagine tryin’ to lift that thing if it fell over!

They say it’s a Suzuki, you know, like them little cars. But this ain’t no little car, no sir. This is a dr 800, or somethin’ like that. Heard some folks callin’ it a dr big. Guess that’s ’cause it’s, well, big! They say it’s a 1990 Suzuki DR 800 S. Don’t know what all them letters and numbers mean, but it sure looks like a handful.
Someone told me it’s got a “single-cylinder engine”. Now what the heck is that? Sounds kinda puny to me, for such a big bike. But they say it’s powerful. I guess it’s like one of them old tractors, got one big ol’ cylinder pumpin’ away. They say it’s a “four-stroke”, so I reckon it goes chug-chug-chug-chug. Not like them little two-stroke things that go buzzin’ around like angry bees.
Seen a picture where they said the dr big suzuki was a “cult classic”. Don’t know ’bout no cults, but I reckon if you like big, powerful bikes, this one’s for you. It’s Overall Length: 2 265 mm (89.2 in), Overall Width: 865 mm (34.1 in), Overall Height: 1 325 mm (52.2 in). That is really big! Reminds me of that big bull old man Johnson used to have. Mean thing, that was. This bike looks kinda mean too, in a good way. Ready to go anywhere, do anything.
Heard some fella talkin’ ’bout it bein’ the “Granddaddy of The Dual-Sports”. Don’t know what that means, sounds fancy. Maybe it means it can go on the road and off the road? Like them jeeps, but with only two wheels. Seems kinda dangerous to me, but I guess young folks like that kinda thing. They call it “Desert Express” too. Must be fast, like one of them trains. I bet it could outrun a horse, even my old mare Bess, though she’s no spring chicken anymore.
This here dr big, it’s somethin’ else. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a bike that big before. And the dr800s big, that’s a mouthful! They even call it the “Doctor Big”, like it’s some kinda important person. I reckon it is, in the world of motorcycles. Heard it was the “largest single-cylinder mass production bike ever produced”. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Like winnin’ the biggest pumpkin at the county fair, but for motorcycles.

- Big engine, that dr big suzuki.
- Lots of power, they say.
- Goes anywhere, I reckon.
- Not for me, though. Too big!
- 779 cm 3, that’s a big engine.
They talk about the dr650s too, says it weighs 369 pounds. That’s still a lot of weight! Says it’s got 35.1 hp and 32.2 pound-feet of torque. I don’t know much about that but it sure sounds strong. And that engine is a 644cc, SOHC, four-stroke. Sounds complicated, but I guess it works good.
They even talkin’ ’bout makin’ a new one. Says they’re gonna use the engine from a V-Strom 1000. Don’t know what that is, but it sounds even bigger! Guess folks just like bigger and bigger these days. Me, I’m happy with my old bicycle. It may be rusty, but it gets me where I need to go. And it don’t need no gas, just a little elbow grease.
Now, I saw somethin’ about a HESSLER Rallye Team making a special version of the new Suzuki 2020 V-Strom 1050 XT. It’s like that dr big, but all new and fancy, for goin’ way out in the desert. They call it a “conversion kit”. Sounds like you can change it all up, like puttin’ a new dress on an old doll.
This whole dr big suzuki thing, it’s a lot to take in. Big bikes, big engines, big everything. I guess that’s the way of the world now. Everything’s gettin’ bigger, faster, louder. Sometimes, I miss the old days, when things were simpler. But I reckon these young folks, they like their big toys. And who am I to judge? As long as they’re havin’ fun, that’s all that matters. Just hope they don’t run over my prize-winning petunias with that dr big!
